We've all been there. You fork out hard earned money to buy an effect only to realize they put a flashy name on an old equivoque technique you learned years ago.
It seems there's just too much of this going on. I thought I came up with the perfect "Card at Any Number" a couple of years ago. I showed it around and was laughed at being told the method predated even Tarbell. I laughed at myself and tabled the idea. Now I'm hearing of two effects, Boomerang and Impression, that use this apparently ancient method. Is this ethical? Also can someone please verify the original source of this move. I first saw it on an old Sankey video as an Ambitious Card finale move. I simply applied it to a stop trick. Apparently someone 100 years ago did too.

"Everything old is new again!", or so the song says. I find that when the latest trick of the week is released, if you look real hard in the books of "old", you will probably find that you are getting a re-hash.
JMHO Cheers!

I understand that invention is generally built upon old ideas. I myself am thinking of making a video explaining subtleties and novel uses of the Sylvester Pitch. I'd, however, offer something new to those who are already familiar with the move.
What I can't stand is a carbon copy of a page of Tarbell. I avoided re-releasing something that was already available to the magic public only to find that Bill Goldman did just that. I don't own Boomerang, so I won't pretend to know all. Perhaps he's added $10 worth of superior patter and handling to this old move. All I know is this: If I released this same effect using a double lift (an equally old move) to get the same results, I'd hear some serious shouting.

OK, now you have me curious. Can you reveal the move without revealing the method (or mention where it is in Tarbell)? I'm not asking for exposure.

Sometimes presentation is worth purchasing a trick for. Plus, there are cases when a performer comes up with something on there own and uses it for many years, developing personal touches. Then, they release it, even though it has already been released as something before. At least it gives insight into another magician's thinking, sometimes.
I don't know about the Boomerang trick, though. Jason |

I was thinking about purchasing Boomerang, and am very interested in this if it's actually just a ripped off older idea.

I have many books containing tricks that are exactly the same, but with fifferent "titles" and different authors. They tell you how they do it differently, with finesses and patter.
Okay, it's never that different, but it's good that they are sharing this with us. What I don't like is the people who just change a trick slightly and reprint it. Usually these fellows are authors who live abroad and may not be familiar with the US origins of tricks. Maybe they are and just want to make money. |
