As a 13 year-old magician I am wanting to put together some mailing packets with show information in them. I don’t know what I'm doing. I don’t know where to send them and what to put in them. Please help!
Thanks!!! |

I applaud your ambition. Before you jump into promotion, make sure you have an act that you can sell in the marketplace.
Do you have a 30-minute show that can play under just about any conditions for audiences of 10-50 people? At this stage of your performing career, focus on getting a tight act down cold. Then you need to do is decide who your potential clients are. At 13 years old, I recommend you start offering your services as an entertainer for children's birthday parties. It's where most magicians begin. Be aware, however, that a group of excited 8-10 year old children will be a difficult audience for a 13 year old to manage. Read everything you can on the subject of performing for children, and start with the families of friends and neighbors. You don't really need a promotional packet to mail out, just a nice 8 1/2" x 11" one-sheet flyer. Get your digital camera out and take a batch of photos. Use the best one on your flyer. The next time you do a show, ask someone to take pictures of you in action before an audience. Use an action photo on your flyer also. When you write the copy for your flyer, don't over promise what you can deliver, just honestly describe yourself and your act. If you can get a few testimonial quotes about your show, use them. You can make up your own flyer on your home computer using a program like Microsoft Publisher. That should get you started. When you do a show, have them available for anyone who asks about your services. Better yet, put a coloring picture on the back and give one to every child in the audience. At this stage of your performing career, you need to focus on polishing your act more than promoting it. Start with friends and family, doing shows at school and for local community events. Another good place to get experience is at retirement and nursing homes. Offer to do a free show (or ask for travel expenses). As your show improves, you can begin improving your promotional materials. Good luck. |
