I think that this is a situation where everyone is right. And I am not trying to start an argument - and after thinking on it I feel - I would like it very much if more stars came into the café and were allowed to post on their own products.
Perhaps there could be a place created in the café where the stars like Darwin Ortiz, Whit Haydn, Harry Loryane, Pete Biro and others that have products can go to tell us what they have. And tell us what they have new. Because no one knows their stuff better than they do! The reason I feel this way is that I have not been happy with many of the product reviews that are in the magic magazines. The problem I have with the magic magazine reviews is that the reviewer often try’s to be clever and witty So in doing so they seem to like to put down many of the magicians and products of today’s magic. So instead of getting an honest review we end up getting a review of a product or a DVD that is very good product. But the reviewer seems to need to run it down for sport. Just to try to look like they are a clever guy. I see this happen often in Magic Magazine's. I feel that here should be a place in the café for magician stars to self promote and give us their feelings about the products that they come up with.

Well, I can understand if my presence on the board might keep someone from stating his true opinion about one of my products, and I certainly would not want that--as I learn a lot from both the positive and negative feedback on my products.
If that is the general feeling, I will try to refrain from commenting on reviews, questions, and discussions that might involve our School for Scoundrels products. I would not want people to feel they have to hold back their true opinions simply because they are afraid I might disagree with them, or that they might somehow hurt my feelings. I do not think that Glen's idea is much of a solution, as that would quickly become simply an advertising thread. Those who disagreed or had negative comments about a product would have the same reticence to discuss the issues with the creators as on a thread such as this. Adam, if your idea of a perfect world is one in which you don't have to put up with the input from the creators of the magic you purchase, and your opinion is shared by many others, you will find that that will probably quickly happen on this board. I, for one, certainly don't want to intrude where my opinions are not wanted. |

Whit you are a true gentleman. If the people I had in mind when writing that post were like you there'd be no problem. As it is, though, your "opting out" would be pointless since the others (the more problematic ones) would not do so. So we'd lose the worthwhile and still be stuck with the muck.
I realise this situation is unlikely to change. But I just hope that some of the readers on the board will get the point - reviewers will be emboldened to write their true opinion and unscrupulous creators will realise that "we're onto them"! Maybe this should apply to magic-shop owners only, as they have financial interest in the product, sans the unequalled understand of the item that creators have. |

Whit, please continue to contribute your opinions and reviews - don't let anyone discourage you from doing so. You have a very creative mind and are obviously dedicated to magic and to teaching and inspiring others. These boards are an excellent venue for that, and your contributions are very much appreciated by the vast majority - keep up the good work! -Jeff

One of the great things about this three card monte DVD set is that it is also has e-books. It contains PDF files of all sorts of information, history, pictures and facts about three card monte and many of the con men that used to play the game. From around the 1800's. To present day.
So the student gets the best of both worlds. DVD - Video and books in one DVD set - the great information in this DVD set goes on and on. As I said before this is what I would call the Erdnase of three card monte. I now consider it the best DVD set in my collection. Well Done!

First, as you can understand, a review is only useful to consumers if it is unbiased. I would like to add that it also is only useful if the person doing the reviewing totally understands the material, the history of the material before it, and how to apply said material in the real world. But as it stands, anyone can register an account here and post "i think that trick sucks" with no reason or motivation. As such, many of the reviews you read will be by un-proffesional reviewers. If they had a bad experiance with a hummer card, any trick with IT they will exclaim as "un-usable with too much setup". Or someone who doesn't like trick decks may gripe about how something isn't examinable when it doesn't need to be. I personally like having the creator at the Café to answer any questions or comments, because at least when the creator post you *know* he is the creator and can take everything he says with a grain of salt or you at least know he is qualified to talk about the product. However, when "magicman252632" post a really good or really bad review about a product, you have no idea whether or not that review is actually useful, because the person writing it has no credibility here.... So unless the Café hires proffesional writers to give un-baised, informed reviews, I think that the creators should definatly chime in, because they might be the only person in the thread that knows what they are talking about! |

Hello,
I am relatively new to the Café and I think this post was very helpful for me. I own Daryl's 3CM DVD and have always been fascinated by this effect. When I was growing up in Chicago I remember watching this one guy perform 3CM and shells on the subway for money. It was awesome! This posting was extremely helful for me since I value Glenn Bishop's thoughts based off his experience. In addition, Whit's comments are very valuable as well. When we deal with facts regarding the products in question and dig down into the details it allows us to make more educated decisions on purchases. I personally like when creators of the effects make comments since they know more about the details than a reviewer who may only watch briefly and write their column. In addition, when considering the 3CM I would prefer to get insight from those who know it best. If all product reviews were as thourough as this posting it would be much easier to make purchasing decisions. Thank you! Kind regards, Rich
