I read somewhere that you can use an 18” diamond cut silk in a regular sized Thumb Tip.
The unwritten “rule of silks” is to use the largest silk that you can for effect. An 18” diamond cut silk in a regular sized TT has a better effect than a 9” square cut silk. So I bought an 18” diamond cut silk. Guess what? My thumb will not fit in my regular sized TT with that 18” diamond cut silk in there! A 9” square cut silk will fit in a regular sized TT. I then bought a TT style streamer. Not wanting to have problems with the space in the TT, I bought the smaller of two sizes. Both were 1” width and I settled on the smaller 68” size streamer. Guess what? My thumb will not fit in my regular sized TT with the smaller TT style streamer! I already have a solution to both problems. I am going to cut the 18” diamond cut silks and the TT style streamers in half. Problem solved! I’m just curious are you other magicians having problems loading your TTs? This cannot be just happing to me. Why are TT load items being sold that do not fit in regular TTs? As far as I know not everybody is using large or extra-large TTs. Thanks for your replies and comments.

Gerard, look at this thread which pretty much answers your question or at least will give you some ideas.

Thanks Dave for the TT link. That was an interesting post.
My TTs and silks are both from magic shops. Maybe the problem is with the way I'm loading the silk. I'll keep playing with it. I have never heard of holding your TT with your finger tips to prevent the TT from falling off. Doesn't that mean that you have it too full? Your TT shouldn't be falling off because its filled up. Thanks.

If you think you are really ready for manipulation and you like silks and TTs, learn what you can from Slydini books about cigarett manipulation and then substitute the loaded long TT for the cig.
I don't smoke and quit doing cig magic in the 60s. This substitution is one of the best things I learned from Slydini. Time after time you can show your hands clean and empty and immediately produce a silk (use an 18" 4 momme silk any color but black or white). Then learn to do this with a dye tube and the silks not only appear and vanish but they also change colors. The audience can call which color will appear. Enjoy your silk magic. I agree. Cigs load better than hanks & silks..

Another suggestion is to get Jay Scott Berry's Illusionering book. In it, he shows how to handle, steal, and conceal a TT when it's completely full and can't be put back onto the thumb.

I believe you misunderstand. He wasn't referring to putting a cigarette inside a thumbtip. He was suggesting using a fully-loaded tip with no room for your thumb to go into, and manipulate it the way you'd manipulate a cigarette. Once the silks are out, put the tip on and you're all good. Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi, Gerard! If you buy a 12-inch diamond cut silk it will definitely fit in your thumb tip. And it will have the length of an 18-inch silk (without the fullness of an 18-inch silk) and looks fairly good when displayed. Give it a try!

I agree that JSB has great ideas on handling a full TT and then wearing it after production (and it doesn't have to involve a thumb!) He also has great TT holders for steals and has a great way to introduce a full TT into play from the sleeve!

I assure you, a 18" diamond cut silk is no prob..but it of course depends on the thickness of that silk..the ones from Stevens are very thin and the right quality..

I use 18 " diamond silks easily in my TT
I use a vernet Jumbo tip - No problems - Heck I could load a dove! - Heaps of room Silk streamers no problems - Definetly upsize your TT! Also it is quite a natural move to hold your TT in place with a couple of extra fingers as a semi closed hand at your side etc. Good luck but it will work with larger silks - I assume you have a small tip from a trick shop! - Get rid of it! |

Forgot to mention, the 18" diamond shaped silk takes slighly less place than a regular 15"er of the same silk quality/thickness.
I wouldn't fancy a diagonally cut normal silk instead. The diamond shaped one looks better/more natural!

Dai Vernon gives some great tips on using a dye tube and silks on his Revelations #10. He demonstrates and explains the nuances of steals and transfers. As always, the explanations are clear and camera angles are kept in mind so the viewer always can see what is happening. What a GREAT series.

Of course a TT is going to have load limitations. If what you are using doesn't fit in the TT, then go to a bigger TT. If that doesn't work, use a smaller load.
It definitely should not be falling off but they can be used as a dye tube and would be used if they are loaded full.

I have several TTs with a cut about 1/4 - 1/2" at the top on the side near my index finger. It serves two purposes. For one thing it tells me which TT is which in my pocket.
Secondly, I know that the split TT is loaded and the plain is not. The small split makes a loaded TT easier to safely get into while in my pocket because it gives me just a tad difference in load space. I can see into the TT I put a silk into in my hand. I cannot see in my pocket! Also, as the magicians' silk importer I have problems with a good number of retail dealers who mislabel diamond cut silk sizes. Silks are measured by the hemmed edge. (All four edges should always be equal! Otherwise, it is NOT a diamond cut silk.) Therefore, a 12" diamond cut silk looks like an 18" square silk but takes the space of a 9" square silk. Don't pay 18" prices for a 12" silk! Loading should be no problem. Do remember to put a corner in last to make it easier to get out. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob, Thank you for the tip on Slydini's handling of cigarettes and then applying it to thumbtips, etc. I believe I have that and will dig it out of the archives.

RevMike,
I even use Slydini's handling with pocket knives, keys, rolled up dollar bills, and eggs. It is a great tool. And just think, Tony wasted it on Lucky Strike cigarettes! LOL Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
