No. We are talking about Frank Garcia's Encyclopedia of Sponge Ball Magic. It's a major hardbacked book, published in 1976. It's quite exhaustive.

Astounded at the price of $200+. I don't recall it being that popular when it was published Marty K

It's a great book. I still have my copy from the 1970's. One advantage in being old, perhaps the only advantage, is that one's old things may become more desirable.

It's a sleeper. Nobody had any idea back in 1976 that the Goshman sponges would take off like they did.
Too bad Frank passed away. It would be great if that book could be republished.

Well, it's nice and the contents is great, but nobody needs to use 5 diff. versions of vanishing a sponge..also it is good to have a choice when starting *learning*..
Basically I do use 2 diff. ones, mainly the toss vanish (Albert Goshman) and a version of the Roy Benson one, without a stick, somehow similar-but not quite- to what Pat Page tought in his video re sponges.. Apart from that -for the Benson bowl- I use a slight variation of the original Roy Benson version..but not quite..because of all the performers I've seen doing it, one always could se a slight pinching action when withdrawing the ball..only Johnny Thompson did vary that and hasn't that flaw (I just discovered this lately -he holds between thumb and second finger), but even Fred Kaps had this pinching action.. The solution I use is very simple...instead of that *pinching*/withdrawing action of the sponge by the firstfinger and thumb, I use an inward *wrist* action to withdraw, a wristaction towards my body, BUT, I start with fingers streched and not with all fingers clenched like in the original handling where only the first and second finger is *streched* holding the sponge.. Now, without a stick, it is exactly the same action.. Place the sponge on the outstreched palm of your left hand, holding it in the right with thumb and forefinger, close left, turn your right at the wrist inwards toward your body to *get* the ball and move on pulling back your sleeve (left) with the right hand.. Therwfrom the right goes (sitting down) to the tableedge whilst your body leans to your right and your left hand is brought up to a spectator (lady) at your right to get her blow on your left hand supposed to contain the sponge.. Try it..it is very deceptive.. The trick is to let the right hand at your left sleeve you just have pulled back, WHILST you lean to your right and your right hand first leaves that position , -to stable your body, leaning to the right- when your right almost is in front of the specs mouth sitting at your right.. IF you have a look at page 33 in *The Worlds Greatest Magic* you'll get a pretty good view of that *moment*/bodyposition.. - in this case demonstarted by Albert Goshman.

Sometimes there is a better way or just a more "prefered" way to doing things. How many types of ball vanish's are there for the cups and balls? Does each have an advantage over the other? Would you use the same one in every situtation? Personally I wouldn't. Mutliple versions allow the widespread use of the application instead of limiting the effect. Remember, we each have different sized hands and abilities. "One" application or vanish isn't enough. MM

The best thing in the Garcia book is the explanation of his adaptation of the retention vanish to sponges. He uses that same "wrist break" action you are describing.
But the key is the "X" spot.
