" My guess is that 99% of the "serious" magicians here own a copy of Erdnase - why not ask the name of one of the chapters? "
Good idea! I especially like it because I just got my copy of it 2 days ago. However, that information is easily "googled" or "amazoned (for the table of contents)". Maybe it should be a specific word in one of the later chapters. EG. What is the fourth word of the first section on Culling. That might not make any sense, but that's probably because I haven't had a chance to read it yet with getting ready to go back to school and work and all. |

On a more constructive note I have a simple solution:
All those with 50 posts should not be allowed to post here but can only post on the Secret Session Forum. Anyone not behaving them selves, can be relegated back here and start again, at the discretion of the boss. That would not only be good it would be funny.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

In theory you should be allowed to go in there and ask for a sleight or method as long as its not marketed. That's not quite how it works. There are a lot of non-marketed effects that people haven't marketed because they want to keep them for themselves. And it would be wrong to disclose those on any forum. A lot of it is in how you ask the questions. Some people never quite get the hang of it. For example, if you ask "How did (insert name here) do that thing I saw him do last week on the (so and so) show?" that's not quite the right way to do it. But if you describe an effect without mentioning a name, chances are someone will PM you with a source, at least. The idea of the forum is Magicians Helping Magicians, not Magicians spoonfeeding Magicians other Magicians' secrets. That would not only be good it would be funny. ------------------------------------------------- Not a bad idea at first glance, but then who would answer the questions? We have several levels of people involved in this forum. We have absolute rank beginners who wouldn't know a double lift from a bottom deal. Sometimes they ask what most of us would consider to be silly questions, but some of these people actually are very serious in their interest in magic. I try to help them as much as I can by pointing them towards sources. And we have people who are interested in one small facet of the art -- mentalism, illusions, books, close-up, cards, etc. If I know the answer to something in their field, because I have worked in all of those, I'll do the same thing. I'll point them towards sources. We have people who are "old dogs" and sometimes they come here to learn "new tricks." I'll do the same things with them -- help the find what they need. And we do have the lurkers -- we can be pretty sure, for example, that the people at the Ouatagamie museum visited this site before June 2 to see how much stuff they had stirred up. I do a lot of my background work with PM's. None of you have read all of my posts, because at least a third of them have been private messages. Some of them have had very specific information. But I figure that I'm here to help other magicians find the things they need. I'm not going to tip proprietary information to anyone. If I did, nobody would give me any more proprietary information, would they? This is the internet, and we will never know for sure who we are talking to. I do agree that we need to use the secret sessions forum more though. ------------------------------------------------ It's not so much whom we are sharing information with, it's how much of the real details get posted where anyone can view it. There's no problem, really, when we are using trade terms, as has been suggested previously. But when we start talking about very specific details, I start getting a little worried. But regarding how you find out who is who -- a few days ago, someone asked a question about help with a very well-known move. I PM'ed him to find out exactly why he wanted to know, because it was a sleight that was common knowledge. Turns out he has a very young son and he had lost some instructions. So I gave him what he needed. He will be back, himself, with a renewed interest in magic. And this is the kind of thing we do with our own discretion.

Thank you Bill.
Your posts on this matter are very helpful. It is, for me, difficult to understand how it all works in practice but I agree with the concept of no exposure. Your points are being understood better by me with your help. We will say I am better informed but none the wiser. With regard to the price of books you are right, as I was thinking of the last copy of Expert Card Technique that I got years ago which cost $6 then. The first copy I got was my first book on cards and is so old and thumbed to death that I can not see the price it was. My most recent book RCT did cost about $50. Thanks for your advice.

I like the idea of checking someone's old posts. You can get a good idea how someone thinks about magic from their older posts.
