Has anyone got a 'polka dot silk' to sell or knows of any dealer in UK or abroad who does sell them? I can't get hold of one. (That's the one where the spots fall off the silk). Would appreciate an email. Thanks

Hypnodog,
You may have to go to a tailor shop and have them make one for you. Get several when you do. They really come in handy. (I got mine at Tannen's but the world was flat back then!) Welcome aboard The Magic Café! Good Luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

Tannen's has a set called Spot Silk Set with 4 10" silks:
Black Silk, White Silk, Black Silk with White Polka Dots, White Silk with Black Polka Dots. They also have one that http://www.tannens.com/cart/cat207.html They also have one called Polka Dot Shower (a black silk with polka dots - magic gesture - dots disapppear but found in your hand and thrown in the air). There's also Metamorpho Spots at Magic Warehouse (kids love this one): "Magician displays an empty black can with white spots and two silks, one black and one white. The two silks are placed into the can and then removed. Magician explains that the black silk changed to white and the white to black. This is repeated and when the audience realizes the magician is pulling their leg he puts both silks back in the can and instantly the spots disappear from the can. Magician then removes the two silks and they are now covered with spots. Comes with everything you need." http://themagicwarehouse.com/general4.html#mb1536 I usually go one step further with this trick and place the spotted silks back in the can then "remove" the spots and throw them back in the can. I remove the black and white silks without spots and show the can empty just like in the beginning of the routine. I'm hope this has been helpful. Good luck! Jimmy

Hello:
I noticed that some company is selling the Polka Dot scarf on ebay (U.S. version). It the effect you describe where the polka dots fall off the silk. I have no idea about the quality of this item; it might turn out to be a piece of junk. Ron |

Watch out for cheap imitations of this wonderful illusion. I have a very nice version, however there are some on the market that have white spots made of paper glued to the silk.
I know because a friend of mine bought one from Hank Lee's and it was terrible. I've had magicians offer up to $100 for mine and I would never sell it Johnny

Actually there are a couple version of this. There is the Sita version, which is the one where white spots are glue to the silk, in the cheaper versions. It is fairly clever in operation.
However, honestly, I have gotten the most use out of one that I made myself. It is just a nice polka dot fabric, black with red spots, and matching black at the other extreme. It is made exactly like the old tarbell color change hanky. If you do not know how that works, you can get one for about $2 probably and model after that. Anyone with basic sewing skills can make on for you. A hint: When this scarf has the red dots on the outside, if you reach up into the folds underneath, there is kind of a hanging pocket. You can take a bit of thread and sew the mouth a bit higher up. The bottom line: put the dots in that pocket. They stay there. When you pickup the scarf, just run it through your hand a couple times, and the dots automatically come off. No sleights at all. Hardest problem I ever had with it was just figuring out how to present it. One thing that I used to do was have an assistant wear it around her neck, like a scarf. She would come out, we would decide it would look better a solid color. Run it through the hand and viola...the dots come off. She puts it back on. quack |

If you end up getting one with the paper stick on dots, without knowing that is what you are getting...which happened to me several years ago...you can fix it up so it is much better looking and working.
Soak it in water, all the dots fall off. Dry it and iron it. Get some red ribbon, cut quarter-sized red dots. Get permanent fabric glue and carefully glue the dots on the black fabric approximately where the white paper dots had been. Frankly, I like a more random pattern than the paper dots that were in perfect rows. Do not use too much glue, you do not want it going thru the scarf. The point is, the silk now looks nice and the dots will never fall off. You should not have any raveling problems on the ribbon dots either, especially when glued and pressed down. Plus you can wash it now. quack |

Sewing crafts have come a long way. There are permanent iron on material that will work. Check out your large fabric stores and inquire about your needs. You may be surprised how easy it can be to replace the dots. You may still have to cut them out. But there are better ways then to glue them on.

Magicduck and wmhegbli gave me excellence idea to fix my silk. yes, I bought the cheap version witout knowing the dots were glue. I were stucked with the ideas of round dots but now I realize what the heck, they can be any shape that I want, why should I have to stick with the round dots. It also solve another problem for me: Round dot confetty. I can make square dots confetty to throw on the air easier than round ones..he he he Thank you for sharing the ideas.

Hyno, saw Duane Lauglin last night and he has a black white silk and routine that changes into a black/white checker silk(s). I think I liked it as good as the "dots" except you don't have the mess with the little dots all over someone floor to be picked up later. Give him an email.

I have a polka dot silk availabel to sell. It is like 36 inches big. It turns inside out so that when you have the polka dots on the outside you snap the silk in the air and all the polka dots supposedly fall to the ground and you are then left with a black silk with no polka dots? Email me if interested. isaiahfoster@hotmail.com

I don't know how long this effect has been on the market, but here goes. A friend of mine showed me a tye died silk streamer. He did the same flicking motion with his wrist and all the tye died colors flew into the air and were then different colored silks.
The multi colored streamer was then solid black. I like this version because it is not as messy as polka dots, however I don't cotton to the idea of having to bend over and pick up the silks. Johnny

There are two supliers for this polka dot silk. One is Sittas in Italy and the other is Jupiter from Hungary. Sittas makes two types: blue with color dotss (It a blend not 100% silk.) and one in black and color dots that is 100% SILK.
The one from Jupiter magic is bigger and is the traditional black silk with white dots. If you attend to the Blackpool magic convention, there is a dealer from Italy Dominico Dante that carry the one from Sittas. Also some times, Jupiter is there as dealer. You can also check with Mephisto in Belgium they us to have the one from Jupiter. |
