Mr. Allen, it is a privilege to have you on this forum. I recently purchased an effect called MatriXpress from Shawn Farquhar. In reading the introduction, he credits the origin of the effect to you and the time the two of you spent together after you won the 1995 IBM Close-Up Magician of the Year (something about a misunderstanding with a customer officer?).
I was incredibly impressed by the close bonds and friendships that can develop within the magic community and I was wondering who some of your close friends and colleagues may be. In addition, I was also wondering if you have ever experimented with the finished product of Shawn Farquhar's matrix effect and, if so, would you have any thoughts or suggestions on its presentation?

Indeed, I spent many happy days with Shawn and is wife. A few more than anticipated but that's another story!
Shawn's MatriXpress is based on a routine of mine. It was the one I used in the 1995 IBM competition. I knew that it fooled a lot of magicians at the time. I haven't played aroudn with Shawn's version but if he wants to send me, I'll be happy to do so! I have continued to do my version and have looked at ways of improving it further. The magic community is probably unlike any other. People from all walks of life, professions, backgrounds, social standing or whatever can always come together with a shared love of magic. I have lectured in some far off lands and always been welcomed into people's houses if I needed to stay overnight. In that sense, every magicians has numerous friends all over the world. As for close friendships, Nicholas Einhorn is someone I spend time with. I've known Nick for many years. Living 10 minutes drive away, we see eachother socially as wel as professionally. If ither of us have a new idea or effect, it's nice that someone is so close to be able to discuss it with. John Gordon is my mentor. Without his input over the years, I would not be the magician I am today (Some say he has a lot to answer for!) Angelo Carbone, Boris Wild and Greg Wilson are a couple of other guys I am honoured to call my friends. Unfortunately, living on this desolate, crumbling island we call the UK, I don't get to see them too often. However,I always enjoy our reunions. They both share a creative streak and a wonderful sense of humour. With Greg, you really have to drag it out of him though ;-) I enjoy spending time with any magician. I think that everyone has soemthing to offer. However, the ones I don't have time for are those with closed minds. I remember sitting with a bunch of magicians. I had an idea for something and one of the others said, "Don't be so stupid. What's the point of it?" I was quite taken aback because I thought he was quite an open minded person. To dismiss a raw idea because you can't see it's potential is nt the sort of 'vibe'I like to be around. As it happened, someone else said, "What if you changed such and such." It set off the process and the effect improved. I am lucky to have many friends around the world and when the opportunity arises to spend time with them, it's always a pleasure.
Creator of iconic magic that you will want to perform.
