I recently performed for a local gathering of cross-dressers and was introduced to "Holly". Holly demonstrated some card effects and advanced coin moves(did Reed McClintocks "7 the Hard Way" to knucklebusting perfection)that were a pure delight to witness. Holly explained that he only felt comfortable doing magic when dressed as a women and that when dressed as a man,he felt awkward performing. I am only aware of one magician(actually a mentalist) who fits this category and was wondering if anyone else has had experience with this type of interesting scenario.

If you are seeking help with your comfort zone ... there are professionals.
There are probably many magicians who feel the need to dress up and get into character in order to do their magic. Would you ask Holly to offer her perspective on this? What does she like about performing and her audiences. Would she want to work for the average audience?

What brought that image into your mind in the first place?
I have enough trouble with the basic concept of dressing up to act out. Clothes don't make the chromosomes as far as I can relate.

Meet me, Helen Held, the Girl No Man Can Hold, as far as I know the only drag/TV escape artist in this area at least (I'm actually interested to know if anyone else is doing this act, so far I'm yet to find anyone). Ya gotta have a gimmick, as the song says.
It is fun to do things as a character, it helps with the fantasy aspect; the reason I'm into magic in the first place is because I have an active fantasy life and like things that play the line between what's real and what isn't. And we all know how much harder it is trying to sell magic to people who already know us personally, there's no mystique. |

Many great comedians would at times perform in drag. Geraldine????(Flip Wilson)I'll remember more but I'm a little preoccupied with this new Hurricane right now.
