That is, it's about time I introduced myself. I have lurked off and on for a while, even posted, but neglected the introuctory part, until now. Hi, I'm Patrick, currently living in the suburbs of the Twin Cities of Minnesota. My interest in magic began when I was very young, (father and T.V.), waned a while, and flourished again in my mid teens. Myself and another camp counselor at the Easter Seals camps put on several shows to the delight of some of the best people I have ever met. When I was 17, we were asked to perform for a dinner that included several prominent people of the community. Butterflies hit the stomach hard, but we did the job and were actually paid. I was thinking that this could be more than a camp hobby.
It was about that time that life intervened and my magic interest seemed to wane to almost nothing. This went on for a few years, still doing a few card tricks my dad showed me, or something I remembered reading at the library for anyone who might have been interested. I then found myself enlisted in the Navy and stationed in Orlando, FL. There, I found a magic shop outside the gates a few miles and went in. I saw a man demonstrating a few tricks for people, but they seemed to be more interested, at times, in the costumes and props also being sold in the store. I saw a performance of Scotch and Soda from afar and was astounded. I crept up quietly and watched him do something else for someone else and was still amazed at what was going on. I ended up buying S&S and for years, was performing this trick alone and was very happy. Towards the end of my Navy career, I was in Everett, WA and was fortunate enough to see the Great Stan Kramien perform and it rekindled my love of magic. I have since found myself, for the last five years, in the Twin City area and pouring countless dollars for books, videos, magazines, lectures, clubs, conventions and effects. I have now gotten to the point that I would like to do something with what I have, instead of getting more stuff. I have found myself being more drawn into performance than "how is this done?" After all, I have said it myself and read it countless ways by countless people: "Mechanics are one thing, but performance is everything" I think that about does it for me. I would like to thank everyone who has posted helpful tips and experiences that will help me in the future. You are all teachers to me. Thanks again, and take care, Patrick |

Patrick,
It's good to get to pipe you aboard The Magic Café. We don't do sea duty here but we do get to enjoy magic and friends who do too. (We do "rope" tricks instead of "line" tricks but we drink a lot of coffee too.) I fully agree with you the the mechanics never replace the performance in magic entertainment. Hopefully you will enjoy yourself here and post often. Bob Magic By Sander |
