There are many opinions on what REAL impromptu magic is. First I will give my opinion and then I want yours.
Each one of use move in our own circles. We have family, co-workers and friends who probably know our habit to some extent. Let me try and tackle another issue first.
In a nutshell real impromptu means unprepared, no magic props and/or items are borrowed. Let's not confuse REAL impromptu with what only appears to be impromptu. That's my take. What's yours? |

Jaz,
My take is the same as yours. Impromptu means unprepared magic with objects lying around or borrowed from someone else. And there's plenty that can be done in this situation...vanishes, transformations, etc. It's harder to learn to do this type of magic, I suppose, because you need to rely solely on sleights, but I think it's worth the practice. Even though I don't smoke, I like to perform cigarette magic...because cigarettes are everywhere and can be borrowed. Same with coins. I learned the Sylvester Pitch (and that took some practice!) so I could do some great stuff with borrowed objects. After all, if you really did have magic ability, you'd be able to do magic with anything, wouldn't you? Adam |

Right on Adam,
I studied cigarette manipulation from sources like Keith Clark's "Cigarette Manipulation" and othe effect by Chanin, Garcia and others. You're right. It is difficult to learn this type of magic but well worth the journey. |

That would be an extreme view in my humble opinion.
For me impromptu of course means what's at hand but what's at hand includes my wallet and what's inside it and my pockets on a daily basis - a packet of cards, rubber bands and coins... but then I was a boy scout whose moto is "Be Prepared" For me personally - I like non-gimmcked tricks but that's purely a personal thing - just seems like I'm keeping it more real...
catch you later

I think impromptu is doing magic with almost any object you see. I noticed that I get stronger effects if items are borrowed or just snagged from the sidewalk.
Like what Gregory Wilson said. "..magic anytime, anywhere, with anything.." |

I also get better reactions when using borrowed items. Sometimes this is because the spec has a personal link to the item (if its a piece of jewellery, for example, and it vanishes) but I think there is a subconscious issue at work too...
If you say to someone, "I'll show you something" and you get out a pack of cards, subconsciously they are going to think, "Oh right...a card trick." Most people have a relative who knows a few card tricks and does them at family parties, so the cards have a subconscious association for most people. If, however, you say to someone, "Hey, can I see your ring? Watch this..." you're most likely showing them something they've never seen and you're avoiding any pre-conceived (albeit subconscious) associations. I've always had my best reactions when doing magic with borrowed items...jewellery, cigarettes, sweets, coins, houseplants (see AoA), etc. I'd rather use the contents of their pockets than the contents of mine. All good points. Actually, impromptu magic is my favorite because it can be done so that it does not look like a TRICK. If you use their rings, etc. then they may not even realize that you are doing a trick until the climax and end of the trick. This unexpectedness will make the trick all the more amazing.

I'd like to take the description of impromptu and give it a twist for the sake of magic.
Some minor preparation is almost always required. This may be secretly adding a coin, adjusting your elastic bands or even positioning a spectator at a good angle. Rehearsing your impromptu effects may also be considered preparing. However I feel as Adam does that using your own cards can arouse suspicions. I also feel that using magic gaffs and props, no matter how common they seem, is not pure impromptu. This is a purist attitude I know, but it's just my opinion. Personally I used to, and will still, carry a few common looking gaffs to do what appears to be impromptu. There will however be times when I have no gaffs with me. Here are some other opinions: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=52 |
