I just got Scott's new book, "Magishing My Way," hot off the presses. I was first stunned by the quality of this book, which is lavishly photo-illustrated. I was also surprised to see that all of the sleights are thoroughly explained and illustrated --the Elmsley count, Jordan count, Rhumba count, etc. It is Scott's largest and best book yet.
In the interests of full disclosure, let me state up front that I know Scott Guinn personally. The advantage this gives me, though, is that I have actually seen Scott perform these effects, such as "Million Dollar Chocolate," "Wedded Bliss," "Plumber's Bottle," and "You Bet Your Ring." I have seen him kick butt with these routines in paid performances, and they're all in the book. I've seen him do effects like "Universal Appeal" up close, and even though I'm familiar with the method, it still looks magical. There's plenty in the book, from platform, to close-up, rings, kids' shows, and so on, although the majority of the book is cards. (A coin book will follow.) There's even a bonus linking rubber band routine from the Cafe's own Bernard Sim, which ends cleanly with two examinable bands. I saw this performed and was clueless. Scott is offering a special deal to Cafe members. See the "Let's Make a Deal" section for details. I urge you to check it out. |

Hi,
Could you please give a listing of the contents? I have Scott's other publications. How much duplication is there? Phillip |

Here is Scott's list of contents under the Let's Make a Magic Deal Section:
CONTENTS -Hi-ways and Bi-ways (elevator card with kicker ending) -Direct Decision (Spectator Cuts to the Aces) -A-Jacks Transposition (an ungaffed Twisted Sister) -What the Devil? (Super easy and effective version of Marlo's Devlish Miracle) -Lumberjack Stew (Multi-phase: production, change, transporatation) -Coeur d'Alene Assembly (assembly, reverse assmbly, instant repeat assembly) -Ransomed Back (strong, easy version of Fulves' "All Backs") -Universal Appeal (three-card "Universal Card" routine) -Face-off (four blank face cards are magically printed with spectator's named 4-of-a-kind. No force and you end clean!) -The "X" on Val Dees (multi-phase Oil and Water) -Dearly Departed (Elmsley's "Point of Departure" plot with a new twist) -Mr. Collins' Opus (an updated and embellished version of a little-known Stanley collins gem) -McCall of the Wild (Wild Card with a difference, and the spec gets to keep the changed cards at the end!) -The Legend of Scott Star, Trader Vic & "Slick Jack" Spade (Magic, gambling and the Old West meet in this feature effect.) -Tri-Optical Illusion (Unbelievably strong--unbelievably easy) -Brundle-Fly Transposition (A memorable transposition effect, based on the movie, "The Fly" starring Jeff Goldblum) -Stick Around (Multi-phase Ring on Stick routine that has received acclaim from laymen and magicians alike) -Wedded Bliss (My closer for platform shows--virtually guarantees a standing ovation!) -You Bet Your Ring (The Borrowed Ring in Nest of Boxes meets Water Monte with a game show presentation. A fun and magical feature for platform performances) -Jellis (Based on JG Thompson's Ellis Ring routine, this is a close-up routine your spectators will love!) Plumbers Bottle (Tricky Bottles for kids shows, with the "sting" removed but all the fun intact!) -Million Dollar Chocolate (My kids show closer) -Bonus routine: Bernard Sims' "Really Linked!" (A simply amazing linking rubber band routine where you end clean and give the linked bands to the spectator to keep!) Hope this helps, Doug P.S. I'm looking forward to getting this book myself. I just ordered it this morning at 4am.

Regarding duplication: there are a few (3 or 4) items in this book that were in my lecture notes. However, the write-up has been expanded and photos added. Other than that, none of this material is in any of my other books.

How, where and how much?
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

I have to completely agree with you all. I received Scott's book yesterday and was up until 2 AM reading through it. Scott, the book is absolutely amazing. Your updated handling of many of the tricks will allow many more people to learn the tricks than would have attempted to before. I highly recommend the book to everyone. The only caveat is that this book is not for the beginner. You must have a fairly good background in card sleights before attempting many of these tricks. However, if you do have a good background, by all means, GET THE BOOK!!!!

This is the first book by Mr Guinn I've purchased - As an owner of a medium-sized magical library - I have to say this is a refreshing new approach.
The format of the book is absolutely outstanding - Being afflicted with ADD -Alzheimer's and a general laziness - I really appreciated the step - by - step explanations, complete with pictures along side the text. The references are clear and easily verified for those of us who like to refer to the original - In each case he has added to the trick and I think he has made some of them more memorable. The effects can all be considered "workers". This book may be the deal we all look for - inexpensive - and chock full of VERY good magic. Check out: "Hi-ways and Bi-ways" - this is the first item in the book and worth a look and a surprising ending. Also - a lot of fun is "The Legend of Scott Star, Trader Vic, & 'Slick Jack' Spade" - Once I come up with a good line of patter - I'll use this everytime. As stated - Too much fun!! I hope that everyone will take a look at this book - And for Max and Jamy - I found no spelling errors or misuse of the English language - of course after reading this - you can tell I'm not an expert on either Dave |

Come on now. What's all the hype about?? Oh yeah! This is a great book!
"Closeupmaster" stated that this book is not for beginners. While it is true that this material is not self-working, the explanations, routining, and photographic aids are so clear that I think this is a book that can help a beginner (not an absolute newbie!) make serious progress. Scott has put enough thought into this material that you can confidently learn these effects as written and know that you are not missing out on a more effective approach. This leaves plenty of room to focus on presentation...and you should make these effects your own through your presentation. (Anyone who tries to perform "The Legend of Scott Star, Trader Vic, and 'Slick Jack' Spade" with Scott's patter verbatim is really missing the point! This one is highly marketable, by the way, and I'm looking forward to performing it.) Oh yeah, and just reading the book is fun! It's a good thing Scott is humble or all the praise he's bound to receive for this book could inflate his ego |

I have just received Scotts book [Magishing My Way] and agree with all the above posts - this is a really fantastic book !
The combination of the concise and well written text with numerous clear and helpful photos allows you to start performing some of Scotts great routines almost immeadiately. As a big fan of 'Do as I do' from the Royal Road I was especially pleased to see other routines involving two decks of cards - as well as a bonus rubber band trick. Overall a very well written and presented book - get my wholehearted reccommendation !! |
