ETMMM is IMHO the best of the classics (including two of Richards routines) with the Osterlind Touch. If your question should be which series you should get, my suggestion definately depend on where you come from and what you actually want. If you are new to mentalism, I would suggest ETMMM. If you not are, get both series. Sven

Well, of course I would love to buy both series but it's a matter of money as well. I guess I start with the ETMMM and then carry on with the Mind Mysteries. Thanks for your comments anyway. I would also love to buy Banacheks PSI Series. Any comments on that? I know it's far off topic! Sorry about that.

The Mind Mysteries series is excellent! I have performed some of the effects everytime now and get great responses. I have seen many different types of center tear presentations and I feel Mr Osterlind's is still the original and the best. There's another point rarely mentioned about his performance and that is, while performing he come's across very friendly, and likeable. I show the performance section to my friends and they all say that they liked the guy so much, that it didn't feel like they were being fooled. I bring this up b/c he seems to have an almost 100% acceptance from the audience. However, he does discuss what to do with Hecklers.

I have both sets and I am constantly viewing them again and again. If I had to choose...probably Mind Mysteries because it is Richard Osterlind's original work and I felt I learned more about him as a performer. It seemed more subtle as if his heart was in it more. But you could hardly go wrong with either choice.

This is certainly an example of bringing a thread to life again. But I just received my copy of Volume 4 this weekend, and have to put my two cents in.
But first: WHAT was the effect which Tim stated (at the very start of this thread) to be worth the price of the entire series? Nosy minds want to know. (We return to our regularly scheduled post.) This volume STUNS me in two ways. 1) Showing me effects that I thought I knew, but in a vital, living way. "The Osterlind Touch" someone called it. The Magazine Test looked so much better than it seemed in print -- my word, but it looked like mind-reading! 2) Acidus Plus (which seems to be the wrong name, but now that it's plastered on the package and on the viewer's screen, I bet the name sticks). It looks impossible, it plays well (Osterlind's presentation is worthy of slavish imitation until one becomes As Good As Osterlind), and it's deceptively simple. An audience member might easily forget there was ever a notecard to begin with. It's very obvious that I'll have to get the other volumes (I only envy Richard's income because of the great need to stock up on all his and Banachek's effects), even if a one-volume-at-a-time purchase plan means one doesn't get the big ol' autographed poster. But then again, since I live on the road I really don't need to keep hanging up a poster and then tearing it down at the end of the day. *jeep! --Chet (Really, what IS the effect that Tim was speaking of?)

Okay.. I have my four volume ETMMM set that arrived and I've watched it incessently.
Wow. Mr. Osterlind, you are incredible. You're beyond words. I saw Anneman's book in a store and I might pick that up, but I am really concerned with what I want to do now Magic, Mentalism, or both I think I can do an act where I do magic.. then, switch into mentalism with a distinct break. Yeah.. that could work. Anyway, let me state out loud here that Mr. Osterlind himself posts frequently here, helped me make this decision, and is every bit a class act. I REALLY want to meet him now. I owe him a dinner But.. is it just me.. or does he act a lot like Peter Falk's Columbo character? Not a bad thing, I love Columbo.. Jarrod |

I have managed to work my way through the dozens of posts in this thread, and I am glad I did. It appears that we all *got* it. I think that what Mr. Osterlind was trying to convey, he did. One of the big items for me was his interaction with spectators and assistants. We have all seen the very superior performer who uses the innocent spectator (usually the prettiest girl within reach) as a tool, and then stands back, basking in the applause until the next effect. Not so with Mr. Osterlind. His performances are a tour de force in not just audience management, but in the treatment of an audience. You know that as each and every spectator filed out of that building, every one had a smile and a warm memory. Each one was glad to have been a part of something so wonderful. On a personal note, let me juxtapose that with an experience I had with a professional magician in Vegas who used my six year old as his comic foil (the little guy had new shoes he was so proud of, and volunteered to be an assistant. The magician took one of the shoes and pretended to burn it up 'by accident.' My poor son was heartbroken, thinking he'd lost his shoe, and by the end, was just relieved to have it back) What did my son walk away with? No, not a balloon, though there were plenty around. No, not a cheesy fake wand so he could one day be a.... That's right folks, nothing but the sickening feeling of having been used as some guy's tool, so he could get a cheap laugh. That is what Mr. Osterlind *doesn't* do. He treats everyone with respect, and after watching his DVDs, you feel that you've been respected as well. There is never a time that you feel talked down to, you just feel that Mr. Osterlind wants us all to be a little better at what we do, no matter what that is, for he has none of the mentalism/magic bias that we see so much of. You can consider me a Richard Osterlind supporter in a big way, for folks, this is the way it is supposed to be done.

Rafa,in someway I would agree with you.The principles used in mentalism seem to be easy. But to present it in a really believable way IS more difficult than you might think.I think this is what DPE666 is trying to get across.(666,the one for you and me...).

So I have some thoughts/questions about the effect "The Trick that Fooled Einstein" (Jack Pot Coins) by Koran
Although it was not demonstrated or discussed in the ETMMM DVDs, I assume that the idea of having a bowl of mixed coinage, with the benefit of even more deception of the method, has been considered and tried. What are the thoughts surrounding this idea? A more complicated and lengthy count? Less control over totals? It seems to me more consistent with a bunch of change in a bucket and less a prepared system. |
