Just got here Andy. Old-Time Radio is Great! Been listening to them for a little over 40 years. Amos & Andy are great and as mentioned above, Sgt. Preston of the Yukon is wonderful. I could ramble on all day about the old radio shows but for everyone's sake I won't.
E-Bay has thousands of the shows available for cheap in the MP3 format and I do most of my business with "The Radio Lady" she has just about everything that is available and is always trying to find those few shows that she doesn't have yet. You can usually get a disc for about $6.00 and they can have about 30 to 80 shows on them and the quality is quite good. Enough of the commercial already. Anyone not familiar with these old shows should sit back and relax and listen to a show or two, they may find that they really enjoy them and may want to build up a collection. The fact that there is so much material available just goes to show that old-time radio is not dead and will probably be around for quite some time. Iven P.S. Andy, I'm Glad that you enjoy the shows I sent you.

I am addicted to Old Radio. It puts me in a relaxing mood and stimulates my imagination. The storylines are great (ecspecially those of The Mercury Theatre...but what do you expect when there were 2 Magicians headlining that theatre? The creator of The Shadow and Orson Welles were both very skilled Magicians).
Good post. I am glad you thought of this...

Jack Benny all the way! And I LOVE the Arch Oboler plays. I got an 1800 show bundle off ebay a few years ago and have barely scratched the surface. Some of the 1930's & '40'2 Oboler plays are quite timely for today, too.
One of my nephews moved to California with his wife, and his first email was about the place they'd just found, which they now call home; Rancho Cucamonga -- yes, of "Anaheim, Azusa and Cu-" |

Plus, of course, Welles played The Shadow a few times on radio in the 1930s.

Wow this is an old post, I thought it was so old that it might have been locked in the first year archives but I guess not.
As of late I've been listening to a lot of Suspense, Arch's Lights Out, Amos N Andy,, as well as the Shadow. I also picked up an interesing tape that has two of Alfred Hitchcock stories on it, the announcer in the beginning states that the two shows are market tests for a proposed new series called Suspense I've tried linking these two shows to the popular series and think they may have been two different series with the same title. I'll have to look into MP3's I've always skipped them as others told me there were a LOT of duplicated shows under different show titles on MP3 OTR disks. Shawn

Most of the MP3 discs that I own not only have two of the same shows on the disc but may have three duplicates on the disc. Also, the volume level on many of my discs change as the shows change. With that said, you sure can't beat the price considering what you are getting. I have two Amos & Andy discs and each one has over 60 shows (more if you count the duplicates) that comes out to 10 cents a show. Long Live Old-Time Radio! Iven

Dudes! you guys are missing the boat here. Right on our very own Café is the father of one of the greatest writers of radio history. Everyone knows Martini, but did you guys know that his son is none other than...Martin Grams Jr. author of about 14 books now?
He documented the history of many old shows in such books as : Suspense(20 years of thrills and chills), Calvalcade of America(The Dupont broadcasts), Information Please(the best radio game show ever) and more. check him out at. http://www.martingramsjr.com Maybe we can get him to join the family? Hey, guys, go to http://www.brandoclassicotr.com/ to listen to radio shows over the internet. Brando plays old time radio shows 24 hours a day. On their main page look down the left column for "Grab Our Schedule" for a complete list. Their schedule can be a few minutes off sometimes and the times listed are Central timezone. I work the 4:00 pm to midnight shift and listen to the shows to help the night go by.
I also listen to Prairie Home Companion on Public Radio. It's the closest thing around to old time radio. |

Thank You Steve and Tate for the links. Martin Grams Jr's website is a good teaser, I will check out Martin Grams Jr's books for sure.
It looks to me like Old-Time Radio will never die (at least not until I do). It seems like it is getting easier to find the old shows but I still do most of my purchases off of E-Bay. I also collect the old television shows on DVD. If you like the "Honeymooner's" their new DVD set of 39 shows is an excellent buy. The quality is better than what I see on tv and the price is too low. Iven

Greetings Iven,
My son was just out in your area for a radio convention in Seattle a couple weeks ago. Steve, thanks from Martin for the plug, as you know he is working hard on paying off the great big log home he just built. While I don't think I can talk him into joining the Café, he did say if anyone from the Café orders any of his books, just mention the Café and he'll pick up the shipping. We are proud of him for sure, just wondering where he gets the time to keep writing all of them. All the Best Marty |

Have you ever noticed that one of the big words used in classic radio shows was "Infernal"? I think Arch Oboler used it at least once every one of his shows... "Slammed the door in my face, infernal fool!" "Your Infernal Excellency" "What an infernal din!" Then again, it always worked, so there ya go.
