Though I am not really a beginner in the sense that I have just started doing magic, I decided to place this question here because it might also be of use to others just starting out. Feel free to move it to a more fitting catagory if need be.
With that out of the way, the question is: What online stores do you folks recommend? I ask this because I know that there are a lot of people out there just trying to get rich quick off of the art by marketing any knock-off effect that is remotely similar to something "popular". I know Penguine is pretty popular, but I have heard mixed comments on it from other forums. Not to sound to harsh about it, I just want to get my things from a "reliable" supplier and know that I am getting what I order, and no support those out to make a quick buck. Thank You Shawn

While some my disagree with their ethics, I don't think anyone disagrees that Penguin magic has good prices and excellent shipping (free too!) I havnent had a problem with them
I also shop at http://www.themagicwarehouse.com , they have an awesome selection and pretty good prices. a new shop I have been going to is http://www.magicproshop.com, they have very good prices and free shipping too...i think right now they might be having technical difficulties with their site though as I've been having trouble navigating |

Well, guess the Penguin discussion could go on forever, I have to admit I'm very satisfied by their customer service, low prices and fast shipping.
I also use: L&L Publishing for DVD's: http://www.llpub.com/ And Hocus Pocus for originality: http://www.hocus-pocus.com -e-
...As long as i`m not a world-champion at anything, the great reactions of doin` magic will do just fine.....

I have good experiences with most online shops. The Magicwarehouse is perhaps my favorite. Nice selection. The only online dealer that I've had problems with was 1magicshop.

http://www.youdomagic.com -- Dan's site covers working magic, along with videos of this being used in the workplace. It combines video with text -- booklets, along with videos that show BOTH "how to" and examples of the magic being performed in a busy restaurant. My HIGHEST recommendation, with a customer support that cannot be rivaled.
http://www.ellusionist.com -- Haven't learned a great deal in the way of "new tricks" from their videos, but have picked up an enormous amount of performance help. Performance is something that I notice a LOT of magicians seem to be lacking, and it's good to see the focus on this. Customer support has always been letter perfect. Only the lack of Paypal usage keeps me from blowing my entire pay.

I buy my things from a a magic store that are run by a swedish guy, since it makes me feel alittle like I go to a local store and they answer questions from newbies like me. Ohh and the adress is http://www.gycklaren.com but since it's a swedish site I don't know how much that helps

I really enjoy using http://www.dennymagic.com because he has two brick and mortor storefronts and I feel like by purchasing from him on-line store I help keep those stores open by giving him business, even though geographically speaking it would be impractical to enter his stores. He also is very selective of the merchandise he carries and never carries cheap knock offs.
I've also used http://www.magicproshop.com and http://www.hocus-pocus.com and have been very satisfied. Another tip, you can never go wrong by purchasing the effect from its creator, like Bob Kohler, L & L, A-1, etc. |

I would recommend ordering from Brick and Motar shops. Some of them have sites on the web from which you can order.
William's Magic is the best Brick and Motar shop...in my opinion, and they now have an online shop to match it. You just get better service and quality when you deal with a physical store and an actual person instead of a web distributor. http://www.williamsmagic.com

I buy DVD's and books from L & L can't recommend them highly enough. I recently purchased some discount video tapes from them which were shipped late due to an error on their part. When they discovered the error they shipped it 2nd Day and split the cost with me. Pretty classy thing to do.

I have been doing business with http://www.spookclub.org/ ,they have good prices and the owner is very helpful. They are based in Canada but he has free shipping to the US right now. You can't go wrong there.

Being from singapore, where there are magic shop but they don't carry a lot of the newer stuff, I often turn to internet shopping for my stuff. I feel that penguin magic is a great site as they offers demo vdos for most of their stuff and their products even come with instructional vdos and discussion boards. I've been to the ellusionist website too, but I'm not comfortable with the layout of their website. also, after reading the past few posts, I think I'll be getting some dvds from l&l.
cheers from sunny singapore... |

Yeah, like an idiot I placed an order with 1magicshop also. How can they still be in business? Are they an actual shop?
I have only seen one post where somebody got an item they ordered from them. My order was placed last month. I'm waiting for the VISA bill so I can refute it. Too bad Al's Magic Shop closed down in D.C. ... sometimes you have to buy online. I guess I will have to try out DennyMagic in Baltimore next time! |
