Hello guys. I have been following your posts for a while and I must say that it's been a huge help! But I would like to ask just a couple more questions before I go and spend the money I don't have...
1. Royal Road to Card Magic Vs. Card College Series. Or does it matter? 2. I've only heard of one DVD mentioned...maybe I'm blind... Encyclopedia of Card Sleights by Daryl? Would more of you recommend this or is there something better. I'm looking to learn the sleights that will allow me to perform the tricks. Any of your suggestions would be tons of help!!!! Thanks! |

hi amazing,
The Daryl videos will show you many card sleights, but very little tricks and no routines. So if you are only looking for handlings of specific sleights, Daryl will satisfy. Personally I like to learn the tricks and the sleights at the same time. -Zero G |

Here is my description and comparison of the mentioned items-
Royal Road is basic with an exception to the classic pass (an advanced move). Royal road contains drills that will accelerate your learning. It, and Card College, are both structured so that you learn a move or moves, and then you learn a few routines that use those moves. Royal road is cheaper than Card College, but does not contain as much information, nor is it as up-to-date. Card College will run you a bit more money ($30-$40 or so), and it contains a much more in-depth description of the moves. It is better illustrated, and it is a more complete collection of card sleights. I do not think it is necessary for you to purchase all 4 volumes in the beginning. Start with the first volume and go from there. (Be sure to get volume 2 shortly after, as it contains a wealth of valuable theory). I started with Royal Road, and went to Card College from there. I see no reason (unless money is an issue) to start with Royal Road, as most of the information in R.R. will be found in Card College. Regarding the Encyclopedia of Card Sleights, this is basically a crash course in card moves. There are TONS of moves on this video series, and for the most part they are executed well, so you will be learning from a good source what the moves should look like (this is not always the case when buying videos). I will caution you in that the series is very fast paced, meaning there is not a lot of in depth explanation of the moves (there is an explanation, but not thorough). If you can learn well visually, you should be fine with this, but do not rely on it as your only source for card sleights. Perhaps buying a good book, as well as this, would help. -Pat

Thanks Zero and Pat! Your comparison was a great help. But I'm wondering if there are any better videos out than the aboved mentioned?

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want more routines/tricks, Easy to Master Card Miracles will be a good start.
I do recommend buying Card College as a basis so that you can learn the techniques.

I have both Royal Road and the first volume of Card College, and I would definately recommend Card College. Royal Road covers much less material, and to me the writing is not nearly as clear. Probably it's just showing its age. I'm planning to order the 2nd and 3rd volumes of Card College soon.
I also have the first 4 volumes of Daryl's Encyclopedia of Card Sleights, and they're very good. The only drawback is that like another poster said, they don't really show any tricks. Usually just 2 tricks per volume. Also, with 8 volumes the price adds up! |

If you are on a budget and are desperately in need of a video that shows card sleights, Richard Kaufman's "Basic Card Technique" is well worth a look. It does not teach any effects but clearly explains many of the more commonly used sleights in modern card magic. The Card College and Royal Road To Card Magic books are highly recommended.

Thanks all of you! I bought Jeff McBride's Video "Art of Card Manipulation" a while back, and after watching, I thought I might post on the board before buying another. I would NOT recommend this video to any beginner. If anything it was a demoralizer!
:wow: However, I am looking forward to a new, better video. Any other recommendations fellas and gals?? Looks like, for a book anyways, I'll probably be going with Card College. Thanks again. |

I second Ian's recommendation of Kaufmans Basic card technique.
I have found it invaluable in learning the basic card sleights. I like to watch the video with cards in hand and follow along as practice.... paul |

Personally, I feel that Card College, while more expensive, gives more and better instruction than Royal Road. However, if money is an issue, you certainly won't be lacking if you get RR.
As far as learning disembodied sleights, I don't see a reason for that. Certainly, it's good to have a general idea of what sleights are available, but to learn sleights without effects seems, to me, pointless. I prefer to learn sleights based on the effects I want to perform. As has already been mentioned, Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles series gives a wide variety of excellent card effects. I would recommend this if you are looking to get a video. The instruction is great, and the effects are technically easy. Learning how to perform them, however, is much more difficult. -Jim

I would have to recommend Ammar's tapes as well. Very easy to learn from, and he gives you great info on the things like the psychology, the subtleties, and other facets of a great trick.

Cool. I have heard of Ammar's Coin Video, but not card video. Or is it a book?
