Joe was very important in the sidehow community, and important to me especially. He was the originator of Joe's Freak show, and also the founder of Slim's Discussion Group. Joe was a delightful ecccentric, usually with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek. More than once I was the recipient of his generosity. Those who would destroy good people sometimes seem to ride free but I think in the end, God Gets 'em even if the law misses. Many of us know the travail caused by just one person, but I ask all of us in the sideshow family not to rush to judgement.
I will miss Joe, as will many. Slim Price

It may be that Joe was more important to the sideshow community than he realised. It clearly came across that he cared about and put a lot of work into the thing that he did. He'll be sadly missed.

My first thoughts were, I think, similar to something Slim said above, but as he also said I cannot rush to such a judgement. I didn't know Joe very well, and on occasions I didn't see eye to eye with him. But in giving us the DG he gave us something special, and left us with a lasting legacy that meant a lot to many many people. A great deal of us in this strange and wonderful business met there for the first time, we swapped jackpots there, argued there, shared times both good and bad there. I meant the world to all of us, and he was the one who gave it too us.
For that, I thank and salute him. May you rest in peace Joe David Straitjacket

Hi All,
"Although somewhat apprehensively, Sideshow Central has started a new Yahoo Group for sideshow fans, showmen and performers alike due to the loss of the former Yahoo Groups run by Joe Bates III. Our new group is dedicated to Joe and we can only hope to achieve the success he worked so hard to obtain. You may join the new group at this URL http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sideshow_Central/ . Let us all help to keep the candle burning! Thank You, The Sideshow Central Staff
