I bought it based on all the great reviews here on the Café and was not disappointed. It is very clever and for once, worth the money. It does what is promised and that is very rare in magic land. Anything by Chris Smith is worth it.

Super Sharpie is the best gimmick I've ever purchased and the only one I use now.
The prediction is written with a regular Sharpie marker that I use for signed cards. It's bold and easy to read. There's no fishing around for a tiny gimmick. It's always inked and ready to go. tdaube |

Can super sharpie be used in close-up setings or is a basic swami more suitable for close-up?
Thank you very much. Michael

Yes, you can use it close-up. You won't be using your swami any longer, I assure you!

Owenscott,
Could you please PM with the info to repair the gimmick. Mine fell apart and I was planning on repairing it with super glue tonight. I gues if super glue didn't work for Xiqual, it won't work for me. Thanks In Advance |

MagicCarisio,
Thank you for your comment. I am sure that you have seen Richard Osterlind using his swami in effects on his DVDS, ie. in pedicting/knowing someone's birthday on a slip of paper before it was announced in a close-up setting. Could you use teh sharpie for this purpose also? ARe tehre any practical restrictions on using the super sharpie where you would use the swami instead. In essence, all of the routines that use a swami, can you use the Super Sharpie? Thank you very much again for your help and comments. Best regards, Michael

You are restricted by the certain type of paper you use for the Sharpie obviously. Also, finding the right type of gimmick to work for you is critical in terms of how much hand movement there is etc. Many mentalists use different gimmicks because of the way it fits their hands. As was said above breakage is a problem as is the whole "putty" aspect. If you like putty gimmicks then this may be for you. The gimmick I use is a regular pencil. It is completely invisible in operation and can work on any surface. I can work with black pens and the writing looks like it came from that too. The super sharpie is a good tool. It is not the best for everyone though. Don't be fooled into thinking that this is the ultimate tool of its kind.

David,
Thank you also for your comments. I will try it out and see how it compares with my other swami writers and TT writers. Like you said, there are different methods that are more suitable to certain situations and performers than others. Best regards, Michael

Here is what I got from Chris Smith in regards to the breaking:
Clear the hole in the XXXX writer (that holds the nib) of all debris (like if there's any felt left in it) so all you have is the plastic. A needle will help you with this - the goal is to create a rough, but somewhat clean surface to glue into. Drop some super glue in there so it fills 3/4 of the whole. Push the nib back in and don't worry if the glue splashes over the top - it doesn't matter
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something but I find that the gimmick is quite noisy, especially if you're in a very close-up environment where there isn't a lot of background noise. I like the concept but I've also found that one has to practice writing a heck of a lot before it resembles normal handwriting - hang on -perhaps I should just make my normal handwriting look more like the untidy writing with the gimmick.
I also flew to Asia a few months back and discovered that the altitude caused it to leak (at least I think it was the altitude). The pen was pretty messed up but some turpentine cleaned it. Anyway, I like it but don't use it that often because of the noise. Simon |

Thanks deceptionguy for the breakage tips on repair.
I like the sharpie because it's what I use for writing in the other routines I do where writing is called for. Also it alows you to write a predicition on the back of a playing card, which is think is cool. Arthur Atsma |

Ok, that's what I did wrong. I need to clean out all that stuff in the hole where the nib goes.
I was really suprised that 5 minute epoxy broke too. Must have been the nib still left in there. As far as noise goes, I use those slick ads that come in the mail as junk. Here in Taiwan we get them daily by the shovel full. It's great though because they are blank on one side. They are really common so it's quite natural to use them as scratch paper. You could also use blank decks of cards, but I would throw the card case away. Hope that helps, James
