I submit the following very rough draft for your consideration;
This is intended to be short and to the point, for those working the HH lines, feel free to make use of it! Arthur Clarke reminds us that science, or technology sufficiently advanced will appear as magic. Modern science further tells us that solids, on the sub-atomic level, are actually more "space" than solid. You see, it is all a matter of vibrations in the universe. Really! If I take these rings, to the eye they appear solid, but at the atomic level, well, we might be able to get them to vibrate properly and move the second ring through the first. (link and unlink the rings ) Aha! you see, the sound or vibrations must be matched just so! the fact that these rings are like material makes this a bit easier. Who could say what might occur if the vibrations are not tuned properly to allow the spaces to align....(show your hand with the ring passing through the center of the palm) Perhaps there are some things in science that should remain as magic!

It was Clarke and his premise addresses the very nature of magic. Not to be underestimated.
How could one distinguish magic from sufficiently advanced technology? What is the sound of?

Very nice!
I like that you've posed an "explanation" of what the audience sees - why this can happen - while retaining the mystery. I also like the science/science fiction tie-in. And it's easy to follow. |

I think showing the key ring piercing your hand is very close to exposure and that the rings themselves with the line of patter (which I like and use something similar myself) is deceptive enough. Showing through your hand lets the spectator in to far. If I have misunderstood what you're doing I apologize...

Hiya, Jonathan:
It seems to me that in order to differentiate between advanced technology and Magic one must have criteria. Technology is, by definition, the accomplishment of a natural goal through the skillful and directed manipulation of natural means. There is a cause and effect correlation between process and result, which, however marvelous, is (or can be) completely understood within the context of natural law. I'm not sure that Magic (either the type we do or the kind practiced by our shamanic predecessors) offers the same correspondence. That is, natural processes and materials may influence natural results, but through unnatural (i.e., supernatural) means. Ascertaining the difference between "Magic" and highly advanced technology might be as simple as asking the presenter whether the device/performance/occurence is a result of natural laws being followed or suspended. Unless, of course, the presenter of this hypothetical miracle is a Magician, in which case abandon all hope of getting a straight answer! Leland Edward Stone |

Let's just say I do not leave things hanging around, but rather like that wonderful move Tabary does to show a continuous loop of rope in his hands, I would hope that anyone performing this use a bit of the same movements, to present the visual of the ring being pulled thorugh the hand or the hand sliding around on the ring.
I guess I was thinking about the movie Philedelphia experiment, or that X-files episode where the time waves distorted things in the physical plane...... and the idea of the visual for a penetration that was incomplete tempted me!

I think this has got a lot of potential. I especially like the storyline that goes with it. It's scientific enough to give believability to the story but not so full of science to make it tough to follow.
Sure, you've got to be careful with the key, but when doing the rings you always have to. I like this one! It would be good to see how this plays out to an audience. |
