We were offered a Cockateel that is very well finger trained. I think they may be a little smaller than a dove and are more inteligent.
Has anyone used one & how did it go? Thnx, Bruce

I've toyed with them. They're sort of like working with parakeets. They're very, very, very clever little boogers and will sometimes skwalk when loaded somewhere and will after a little time possibly figure out a way to escape. They make cool pets though just to have to sing to you, although in the morning they get really annoying if you're a night owl and stay up all night. They'll sing, chirp, and wistle and entertain themselves wit their toys and bells and whatnot and you'll find yourself contemplating sending a dirty rolled up sock hurling towards their cage, but then you remember it will only be temporary peace. But then again I live in a small studio so I sleep with ear plugs in now and that helps a lot.

I have used them in the past. They are very easy to train because they are so smart. As Dan said, they do figure ways to escape and can be noisy.

Hello,
What kind of magic can you do with Cockateils and Budgies? I have often wondered what type of effects you can do with them, Can you use body loads? Best, Luke

It all depends really, of course you can use them in like a dove pan, chick pan, dove bag (the kind with a zipper, I don't mean a dove holder), etc. When you get into working with parakeets, finches, canaries, you have to be really careful with what you're doing because they're very fragile. They have small little boney feet that could easily get broken or seriously bruised, their toenails get sharp very fast and since they're so small they can really get caught up in material. That's why when I produce them from a holder the holder is made of a very light sort of foam rubber material so there is no fabric for them to get caught on. You can body load them, I sold Darcy (he's on the Café') my sleeving gimmick for a parakeet. It's sort of a barehanded production where you start clean and end clean. OLEC is a classic that like basically every dove magician pretty much does at some point in their career it seems, you could do like a banner nest of boxes with a cockateil I suppose. For my kid's shows I produce a parakeet out of my egg bag after the child has reached in and re-produced the egg themselves, I say "did you see my secret assistant when you reached inside" -or something corney like that- by that time I've got the keet loaded and I open up the bag and have them look inside and they'll see the parakeet sitting there and then they freak out and get excited and then I say like this is my assistant booger (its a green parakeet) and he crawls out and up my arm and I say 'well how do you think the egg got in there'. For a dumb little bit like that it's one of the highlights of my kids shows because the child helps like produce it and whatnot. If you look into your current material I'm sure there's a way to work in a keet or cockateil some how. good luck,

Thanks Sperris, do you know of any books of video's I could get hold of to try and learn some of this stuff? How did you learn trial and error? When your extreme dove magic site gets up and going will you be selling any budgies and parakeet stuff on there? You have a great website by the way, I checked it out and watched the quicktime vid, very nice dove stuff very pretty cool clothes by the way and I liked your dove on cane.
Best, Luke

Thanks dude, rawk on! Yeah really its just trial and error if you're incorporating it into your current act. Usually if its somethign major I'll just take an evening to myself and sit in my kitchen and make stuff and tweek things until its right, I may have to stay up all night, but I try to get it as perfect as possible. For somethign like the egg bag I just did it one day cuz I always thought the voulnteer pullin the egg out on their own at the end was a weak climax so I wanted a kicker. It gets a laugh too b/c the egg is like bigger than the parakeet and all the attention is on the spectator pulling out the egg and I'm home free...
SperriS -ps, the extremedovemagic site will be up soon, I'm designing sites for two other people at the moment and then re-doing mine on top of that, but I'll post when the site is done and I'll probably be putting up the parakeet sleeving gimmick too

Cool, I can't wait till it gets going I will be buying big time from it. So what would say are the key elements to get started with Budgies and parakeets what do I need? I have thought about doing Budgies for years but I never knew anyone that uses them or how I should go about starting. Can you tget budgies to fly back to you? Do you have any good books or videos you can recommend?.
Best, Luke

"Parakeet magic" is an awesome book for budgies and other parakeets. It was put together by quite a few magicians. The main one was John Shirley. It took me forever to find my copy because I don't think it is printed anymore. Good luck in your quest with parakeets.
