Does everyone spend a lot of money on gimmicks, like spare phones etc, and watches, to appear to crush theirs?

I think you are referring to a fairly common gag. Invariably, while you're doing a street show, a mobile phone will ring in the crowd. Some performers (I've done it before) then stop their act, take the phone and then chat to the person on the other end. If you have a dummy replica of that particular phone (I used a Nokie 5150 which are everywhere) you can switch it for the real one, put it in a back and smash it with a hammer, or whatever. I'm more a juggler than a magician, so I just stick with a gag, rather than do a trick.

I have a few gag props as such. one for instance is a large rubber blue and white capsule that looks like a pill. Another is a small rubber brain. Whenever a trick goes wrong I usually pull the capsule out and ask for a cup of water things are not going well. Or I can use the brain as a final cups&balls load it gets a laugh when they ask howed he do that I lift the final cup and say maybe this will help you figure it out...depends on the crowd..The rubber cell phone gets a good reaction just depends how you pull it off..although I use my brains a lot!!!

I love the smashing cell phone gag, somone close to me uses her cellphone alot, I mean ALL THE TIME, we were talking one day and her phone rang. I pretended to get really mad, grabbd it, and smashd it on the ground.. You couldent imagine the look on her face.... I was in trouble for a pretty long time.
But to answer the question, thats the only time I used a fake for anything, but I would do it again in a second |
