(did a similar post re. this in "Pick a card...",
but as it's related to this forum I ask here too).

The question is if anyone can provide some information
of which Mathematical Principle is the Modus Operandi
in Nick Trost's packet trick "Quadraplex", and if there
are other similar tricks or routines to be found ?

Have tried to find something similar in "The Card Magic of Nick Trost" + in some of his earlier booklets.

Have also had a look in Mac Tier's excellent book "Card Concepts" without, at least to me,
finding anything.

Would you provide a short summary of the effect of Quadriplex for those of us not familiar with it?

OK here is the description direct from Hank Lee's,
which is one of only two places where I've been
able to find it listed. As I do most of my ordering from Hocus-Pocus & LLpub I've never gotten hold of it.

If it's a matehematical principle behind this there
most be other ways to use the same principle, or
other tricks or routines based on it.

The only principle I've been able to find that bears
resemblance to this is the "Parity Principle" in
MacTier's "Card Concepts", but that principle is
based on a 5x5 matrix, and this seems to be 4x4.

The effect
Quote:
Four Jumbo Cards have been cut into quarters, making a total of sixteen pieces.

Out of 720 ways a spectator can turn over the 16 pieces, you predict: Exactly how many he will turn over and the exact quarter card he will select! 100% accurate every time!!

An amazing piece of card magic. Really easy to do. Comes complete with the cards, predictions and a wallet to hold them all!

My curiosity was aroused by this effect so I ordered it from Hank Lee.
The principle involved is discussed by Martin Gardner on page 143 of the book, "Martin Gardner Presents". It is a republication of an effect called "The Paradox Papers" from Pallbearers Review, July, 1971. In it Gardner credits the discovery to Henry Dudeney. Gardner also describes two more effects using the same principle. Aldo Colombini also published an effect that used this principle in the Linking Ring a few years ago.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Dlhoyt:

Thank you for your answer to this. Have the Gardner
book and have looked it up in it. Probably I'll end
up buying this trick in the end, but have to find
something more to order at the same time as postage
will be ridiculous high for just this item...

Having read the principle I come to think of that
something a bit like this is also included in one
of Phil Goldstein's Colour books, and also in Lee
Earle's SYZYGY as well as in his MIND book.

All the Best

Dlhoyt, Is the Columbini effect you are referring to his Pre-Decktibility effect?

Kephri, Do you happen to know the name of the Goldstein effect and in which Color book the effect is located?

Thanks for the info.

Thanks, Magnus. I'll pull out the book and take a look at it.

Is it the principle of Aronson's _Shuffle-bored_?

This principle has been heavily covered in John Bannon's book, "Dear Mr. Fantasy", with 3 routines:

Degrees Of Freedom
Origami Poker
Perfect Strangers

An excellent treatise on this "effect" and routine.
