I have a bog standard quarter column in my Yellow Pages (which measure about 2.5" x 2.5" - plain black on yellow).
Do any of you splash out on bigger adverts and/or with colour? Does it get you more bookings. Is it worth it when you take into account the extra expense? Mark |

Er, -NO!
Have run a quarter column in Manchester South YP since time began! Tried one of these 'half-column' ads about 1996 or thereabouts. No difference. Never tried a white or coloured ad. though. (Oops! that sounds sinister doesn't it?) Alphabetic positioning, not overcrowding with too much text, type of border used, and that all important bold website link are all factors though, we find, Mark. Cost of ads. have actually dropped in recent years as YP say other types of advertising have eaten into YP's market. Who am I to argue with this? Even though we are doing better than ever out of good old Yellow Pages! Tony. |

When is the final date for the next years YP?

Different UK areas, different publication dates Matt. Phone the YP office in Sale.
Now, I believe YP does not always have the same impact in the States, is this true? Here in GB it's still a highly respected advertising media. Tony. |

I stopped running ads in the YP years ago! I would prefer to spend the money on a direct mail campaign.

When talking to your rep ask for all the stats in terms of how many people look at each size/style.The reps here all want you to go colour but in my area, size is what matters!
Here, 50% of people who look in the book are looking for a business they have heard of. This means if your new and the YP is your only marketing then you could have just lost 50% of your potential customers. |

I'll E-mail you my ad, it's in colour and although it only brings in less than 10% of my work it more than pays for itself. I go the extra mile because I want it to stand out from the rest.
Next years is based on the design I'm e-mailing you, I just give to the YP people, they tidy it up and make it look it's best for the book.
Yours Funfully

I think another important issue that is being lost here is not always about size or color of the ad but exactly what is being said in your ad to target prospects.

We have a major book here (SBC) but it comes out in Nov, I missed it and we have Verizon. Verizon is a smaller known book but ads are cheaper ($19 a month for bold) and less magicians in it. It targets cell phone users. Also, it is bilingual (we have many Spanish speakers here). It also comes out in March 05. I think I will place a listing in it for nothing else, all the ratholers that keep books year after year (I have the 03 one:)
Any comments here? SBC currently lists 11 magicians.

I believe you ad should STAND OUT from the other ads! So when everyone goes colour I spend the extra money on getting BIGGER! My bold B & W colours stand out from the colour ads around it!

Certainly size will get attention, but you also need to make sure that your add shows your features, highlights the benefits of the features and gives a "call to action" type of ending to get the person to want to contact you. These simple rules can make a big difference in any ad that you do.

Just make sure you are accurately tracking how people hear from you. Some are from ads but others may just be from word of mouth.
