SAM and IBM offer group insurance rates for their magicians...you could check with them.

Unfortunately, SAM and IBM offer liability, not health insurance.
I used to have a health policy as a member of my local arts council, you might check your local council. Last year the arts council dropped the service and I went looking. Local chambers of commerce offered plans, but I got the best deal going right to the marketing department of my local HMO. As a subchapter S corporation with 2 employees, myself and my wife, I qualified for a small company group plan. |

I feel for you Doc, I'm a type 2 diabetic.
My insurance for myself and wife runs $700.00 a month. It does include co-pays for the Doctor (around $15) and $32-$36 for each prescription for 90 days of meds. (I have 6 I'm on, including Glucovance, Advandia and Crestor). Ask about their policy on Pre-existing condtions! Another option is to get a higher co pay on major medical (i.e you pay the first $2000 of Hospital visit). Are you a type 1 or type 2? That can make the difference on if a company will insure you. Hi Jim:
You are incorrect about the health insurance as it relates to IBM as they are now offering a health insurance policy and life as well. Details here: http://www.magician.org/Health_Insurance.htm Martin

Check with your local Chamber of Commerce. Most offer insurance. It is something I actually have to look into. Glad I found this thread!

I heard a lot of Chamber of Commerce's don't offer it anymore. But then again, I'll never know until I check.

Dave,
Check with your local HMOs about their requirements for small group plans. You want to talk to the small group enrollment representative. In my area I just needed two full-time employees. As a sub-chapter S corp it was easy to add my wife to the payroll in order to qualify. I just had to cut her a paycheck once a month and pay the withholding taxes. Not a big deal. The other benefit is that once she has accumulated enough quarters of full-time employment, she will be eligible for Social Security benefits when she turns 65. Sorry, I don't know about pre-existing conditions, but I think most policies have a waiting period before they cover pee-existing conditions. Bring it up when you talk to the representative. They have lots of plans. Jim |

Jim, Thanks for the advice, probably the best I've seen on this forums related to the subject. A friend of mine (who used to sell insurance) told me I could start the company with another employee, and later the employee "quits" and then my wife will be able to join the plan at the lower rate. He said it could save up to 30%. I'm definitely going to do some research, because from what you told me there are a lot of things to think about.
BTW was there are reason you decided to become an S Corp instead of an LLC? Danny, I agree... The media may not bring it up as much anymore, other than to play politics, but it is still an issue that affects myself and many others greatly. I think it might be better to find a way to get it on my own rather than allow the republicans and democrats to decide my fate. |

S Corp is a federal tax designation. LLC is a (typically) state designation. There are many LLC businesses that are also subchapter S corporations. In brief it would work like this.... File with state as LLC, under federal "check the box" rules you would elect to be taxed as an association (corporation), then you would complete the S Corp paperwork and that's it.
Be careful about adding the wife to the payroll just to get small business group rates. |

I joined the NASE - the National Association of the Self Employed. They have a good group insurance plan. It's surprisingly affordable for me, a healthy fellow with no preexisting conditions, and my daughter. They alo have a slew of other benefits that have come in handy with my business - also an S Corp. Go to http://www.nase.org

As for my wife, I wouldn't be adding her just to get a group rate. The plan in the long term is to run the business together anyway. However, if I can save a few bucks, I will. After all, big time corporations have gotten away with worse Quote:

Actually, I just did some research on NASE, and here's a review from scam.com
http://www.scam.com/showthread.php?p=460568 Many there claim its just a front for a different company to sell insurance. Not that I don't appreciate the help, but I figured I'd share it. Dave |

Doc,
I used to have the insurance from NASE but dropped it when I found better coverage at a better price here: http://www.ehealth.com If I am not mistaken, they basically create group plans from the people who apply through their site and you can pick the plan/deductible and add-ons you want. Currently, I have Aetna through ehealth.com Sincerely, David

Yikes on that complaint! All I know is that I took my daughter to the doctor 6 weeks ago, and they sent me a check for the $75 they pay for office visits, and, when he referred me to a dermatologist, they sent her a check for their portion, and I paid the remaining $72. They do have pretty strict limits on what they wil pay for a procedure, which is typical, but they let you go pretty much anywhere. They only problem I've had in the four years I've been with them is an argument over whether one test was necessary or not. And, eventually. they paid for it.
That being said, that's just my experience. I'd check around, diligently, and find what is going to work best for you. I was with Kaiser for several years, and had some AWFUL experiences. But I know people who swear by them. |
