Scott,
Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures and descriptions. Very well thought out. I've been having the volunteer hold a large zip lock clear plastic bag as the envelopes shred and the pieces fall into the bag. After the envelopes have been shredded, I have the volunter seal the bag. When the money is not found in the chosen envelope, I shake the bag to "look" for the bill. Then I hand the volunteer s strip of Scotch "magic" tape. If there was only a way to make your shredder battery operated so you wouldn't need an AC plug to make it work. I love the fact I can shred with out plugging in... Thanks again Scott, Ken |

Ken,
I like that idea. After buying the Innodesk Shredder yesterday, I was thinking of letting the pieces fall on my side table then putting the shreds in an opaque envelope to keep the volunteer (and audience) from seeing that there is no "bill" in the remains. However, I can really see the comedy potential in what you suggest with them holding the zip lock bag. But let's think through this for a minute. What if you placed the "prepared" fruit in a brown paper bag? The bag could have "TRASH" printed on it or it could just appear that way, being all wadded up and creased and basically nasty looking. You get the idea...not new. You start shredding the unselected envelopes with the hand held shredder but stop midway through the shredding process to get the brown paper trash bag. That way you can hold the bag yourself under the shredder as you operate the hand held shredder. After all the paper is shred and drops into the bag, place the shredder on your table and set the trash bag on the floor. Complete the routine with the bill not being found in the selected envelope then nervously rummage through the brown paper "trash" bag fevorously looking for the pieces. After a few comic moments of pulling out discarded potatoe chip bags, soup cans, etc., reach back into the bag and pull out the fruit and hand that to the volunteer as a gift for his money. The fruit is later opened and the bill found inside. Just an idea. yours, Scott

Okay, another idea now that I'm getting warmed up.
The Innodesk paper shredder looks kind of like a metal detector wand. Why not attach or palm a small buzzer (from a toy radar gun or other cheapo toy) so that after you have borrowed the bill from the volunteer, you can first "wand" him to see if he has any change. You could also use it to pass over him just before you shred the envelopes. Just another idea or two. yours, Scott

Scott,
Great ideas. That's why I love this forum. Good ideas become great ideas. I love the idea of the trash bag. However, I wouldn't want to keep my hand in the "trash" bag for too long when pulling out other "trash". I wouldn't want to give the impression that I was fishing for the bill and loading it into something else in the bag, like the lemon. After all, the shredded envelopes "containing" the bill is supposedly in the same bag as the revealed lemon. Excessive time of the hand in the bag might put more heat on the lemon than I would want. But I still love the idea of the trash bag. Scott,on an earlier post, you mentioned having a fake green bill or paper in the envelopes. I typically tell the volunteer the other two envelopes contain blank pieces of paper. So when I dump the contents of their chosen envelope onto their hand, a blank piece of paper falls onto the hand, ala Terry Seabrooke routine. I assume then, I would have to "magician" force that envelope so it would be shredded and the green fake wouldn't have a chance of falling onto their hand. I'm still brain storming some ideas for the shredder and will post them soon... Until then, thanks Scott and Regan for the ideas. Ken |

I just returned from a show where I used the shredder and the trash bag for the first time. It went very well. I shredded one envelope at a time giving the volunteer another chance to make sure she wanted the stick with one envelope. When I shredded the second envelope, there was no going back...although I reversed the envelope so it began to come back up as I asked them one last time if they were sure.
When the lady opened the envelope with the classified ad newspaper clipping, I immediately started fishing through the bag pulling out trash. Now here, Ken, is where you can pull out some green pieces of paper that looks like a shredded bill. It could already be in the trash bag! That's part of the beauty of the trash bag! It doesn't have to be in one of the envelopes or forced on the volunteer for me to shred. I pulled out some papers and plastic bags, then asked if they like goldfish crackers. I pulled out an empty bag and said, "so does my wife." Anyway, I had the lemon in the bag ready to accept the signed bill. I believe I could have been smoother about it by using one hand, but by that time I was digging with both hands in the trash and it was funny. I had all the time in the world to put the bill in the lemon using both hands. I wondered how it went over and I got my answer while I was packing up and getting ready to leave. The lady volunteer came over to me to ask how the bill got in the lemon. She was standing right next to me and if anyone had a better vantage point than me, it would have been her. But she apparently didn't see anything I was doing in the bag and she was completely fooled. She thoroughly enjoyed it. And so did the rest of my audience. So thanks again for the idea of the handheld shredder. yours, Scott

Scott,
Great routine....I would think the loading of the lemon could happen before the trash bag is even brought out. After she selects her envelope, and you go to your box to get the shedder, the bill could be loaded in the lemon while you're getting the shredder and then dropped in the trash bag pretty quickly. The shredder is then brought out. As the first envelope is being shredded, the bag is then brought out to catch the clippings and the dirty work has already been completed. All that's left is to play up the gags of the trash in the bag. A clean and empty hand can bring out the lemon at the end. Another, maybe not so original, idea for a gag could be to have a coupon come out of the spectator's envelope for a product that is in the trash bag, possibly the goldfish crackers, or even fresh produce, perhaps a lemon!!! Scott, I'll PM you another idea that will put the nail in the coffin to end the routine. Take care... Ken |

Hocus has an item called the "Counterfeit Detector" that may be worth a look. Its a battery operated "false" shredder.
