I just recently made a nice little discovery which initially had absolutely nothing to do with magic but ended up as an crucial atmosphere element in a magic show.
I´ve done some screenwriting in the past, being a co-writer of a mini-series. That gave me an interesting oppurtunity to write a second draft of a feature film which I have been doing for a couple of weeks now. I use a screenplay formatting software called Movie Magic Screenwriter which has an interesting feature: it can read the script out loud with some artificial speech plug-in. The software of course is intended for English, for which it indeed is quite handy. The script of course is in my native Finnish. I was testing the different features some time ago and thought I´ll give the "read script" option a go as well. It was absolutely ununderstandable, with difficulty I recognised a few words. It was actually quite funny, as if the computer having a some sort of fit. Anyway, there´s different voices avaibable and one of them was simply "female whisper" and I assigned that to the entire script and let it run. And that was absolutely eerie, almost scary as if evil spirits were whispering in the room. I played it for a friend of mine who does a spirit cabinet routine and it ended up as the sound effect for the routine. Played softly in a darkened theater it sounds awesome. Only problem was that it read all the numbers in English, but that was a quick fix. So the "ghost effect" is actually a software reading news from an online newspaper with all numbers removed. Now I don't know whether anyone has any use for this, but if one needs eerie ghost-like sounds, this is worth checking. I don't know how other languages would sound, but Finnish has lotsa ä´s and ö´s (hope you all see those all right) and its in every way very different from English. And though I´ve never heard or tried, there must be other software capable of this as well, this was the first for me.

That's a VERY cool idea, mvmagic! Thanks! I've seen a few posts here by people looking for effects processors to create spooky-sounding voices, and I'm certain your suggestion will help some folks.
Cheers!
