I dreamed this one up years ago. For someone with TV connections, it would make a carrer.
Think about the table of death. OK? We have a square jail cell, very tall. Spikes on the bottom and a small platform with an iron ring in the center. Another top bed of spikes slides up and down inside of the cell, sleeves over the outside four jail bars. There is a pully at the top of the cell. A cable, attached to the top of the spike bed goes over the pully, down though a hole in the top of the spike bed, and ends in another iron/steel ring. The jail is opened; the bed lifted and held in place with two wood beams. The cable fed up and over. The escape artist is locked in leg irons that go through the ring in the bottom, and handcuffs that go through the ring on the cable. The jail is locked The bed is slowly lowered, lifting the escape artist off the floor until he hangs in the middle of the cell. A curtin is lifted.... Now, if he takes the cuffs off, the bed falls on his head. If he takes the leg irons off he is slamed and impaled at the top. If he did "break free" there is no where to run. Seconds pass.... The bed falls with a CRASH!!!!! The curtain drops, and the escape artist is free, on top of the bed, picking the door lock, which he/she opens and steps forward to take their bow. Now THAT would be something to see.... Have fun |

Oooh.... might want to check with Dr. Zodiac on this one. I drew this up about 3 years ago when the underground was running and PMed him the performance rights about two years ago. The only differences being a random computer chip runs the timer and releases the spikes and not having the cuffs or irons attached. He may be using the Spike Cage in chi town in some of his shows, I don't know. I'm not sure if he ever built it or not, but I did give him express permission to perform this as well as the construction steps and mechanical functioning.
Dr. Zs design used spikes on the bottom, only(?) but the origional drawings are a center suspension and two spike beds, but not in a full sized cell. One of the scaled down size jail cages on wheels. I also drew one that had hidden spikes that came from the bottom of the cage floor as a surprise event at the end, kind of launching the cuffs and irons up as the spikes slammed into them. Same thing, with the random timer.I may have given him this one, now that I think about it. Its been a while now so it could have been either or both I guess. An extremely similar thing was also shown in a movie called (I think)the cube. I don't know when the film was shot but probably several years before I drew my versions up. I saw it afterwards and recognized the set up right away. I never saw the cube 2 so I don't know if it was in that one or not. If he's not using it already, I say build it. It's too good to pass up.

Goes WAY further back than three years. Also, I think yours doesn't use the idea that the very act of escaping is death as it would release the spikes, or you. So I do not think these are the same at all. |

Actully they are not the same. but they are both excellent ideas.

Yes, these triggered off a random timer, so there is a countdown clock. One drawing involved a keypad where a spec enters a random number after being told to pick three digits, not too high or too low. Then a card is pulled off the clock face to reveal they just set the timer.
Similar action, but different triggering. They are all pretty much edge of the seat material. I drew about a dozen or so with spikes and the rest were chainsaws, circular saw, and flat blade type things. I never built any myself. I thought they may have been a bit extreme for the under 18 crowd. Dr Z was working a regular bar gig at that time so I thought it might fit in for that. Like I said, I don't know if he ever built one or not. Some one should break out the welder though, and give one a go.
