Anyone seen/used this goldfish production tank from Hocus Pocus?

Fishtastic was modeled after the P & L Aquarium Production. It is fabricated in plexi and plastic. Once filled with water it is very deceptive and rather simple to execute. Two or three goldfish is the maximum load for production as the oxygen is depleted by more than that number. For a larger production of fish, use guppies.

Beware!!! I have experimented with Fishtastic and it just does not work. Do a search on this topic - there are another couple of threads with the same conclusions - it's NOT just me! Howard at The Trickery (above) either a) has a vested interest in plugging a product that he sells or b) has some additional knowledge about how to make this work as described. Being a charitable sort, I suspect it's the latter and I invite Howard to explain here (or in PM's) how to encourage the fish out of the secret compartment so that the effect works. Incidentally, here in the UK, guppies are regarded as tropicals, i.e. requiring water at around 75 degrees, so would be unsuitable for performing. Are they much hardier than we think? |

Hi Ross.
Of course there's a vested interest in selling our produducts, but that is not the main reason I posted a reply. When this product first hit the market, I actually bought 3 goldfish to try it out. Truthfully, I had my wife buy the goldfish. After the tank is covered with a foulard a subtle forward tossing motion opens the chamber. On occasion all 3 fish came out. The other times, 2 of the 3 came out. In theory, the more fish used, the more will be visible for production. If a dozen smaller fish are used and 3 stay inside the chamber, to the audience, it is still a wonderful illusion. I was not aware of guppies requiring a 75 degree temperature as I am not a fish person...thank you for the insight. Mutiples of smaller fish will work better. From the many sold over the last couple of years, I've seen only one defect in the tank's production which was returned to the manufacturer. |

Hm! YOu're clearly sincere, Howard, and I don't disbelieve you. I'm just puzzled why (despite repeated attempts)the fish didn't rise for me - or for at least one other Café member who I have discussed this with. They stubbornly stayed in the base. We were using six, seven, more fish.
Perhaps the type of fish were different? I was using standard non-hybrid carp-style goldfish, 2-3 ins long, 80p each at Paul's Pet Mart, Kilburn. |

I'm not certain. Perhaps Steve Bender of Ickle Pickle Products can shed some light. He does not have an email address or web site. I will pm you his contact information.

Interesting thread here. I have had my fish tank for a few years now from Ickle Pickle and it was made to order when I bought it from a local dealer. I have to say that I too have retired this item due to the fish not being co-operative or "rising to the occassion". I have used a several different types of goldfish and tropicals and all seem to be mesmerised or like the "cavern affect" of this prop. Like Ross, it's not for me anymore but I do the idea is great. Maybe someone can enlighten us to a type of fish that will work.
