Well, I bought a set on ebay for $100. Although everybody here is bashing them, they are a bit better than the bashing they are getting here. I have a nice collection of cups, PF Silver cups, Monti, Sisti, Charlie Miller, etc... My wife, who has some design taste, picked the Garcia's as the most beautiful cups to her. And she is much more a spectator than a magician, so her vote counts. Maybe cups aren't supposed to be beautiful.... But if so, why all the obsessing over them ? The bottom line is that they look pretty substantial, they catch the eye, the bumps do the job, they hold 3 huge balls in the attic, handle a tennis ball load, and look appealing to some non-magicians. The sound is pretty lame, and they are a bit light, but way heavier than Morriseys. And at a 100, you can bash them around physically.

That's closer to what they are worth than what Tannen's asks for them, which is $250.00.
Regarding Busby and spun cups. Recently, when a friend of mine advertised a set of cups to sell on eBay -- spun PF/DD cups -- Busby e-mailed him and told him that HE had spun the cups, as well as spinning some sets for Danny. He claimed that they had a feature that "only" his spinner could get to happen on the cups, and that neither Perigee nor Rings and Things could produce. Let me state right here, uniquivocably, that Jeff Busby is absolutely full of "it." The seller had a chain of provenance that proved that they were spun at least eight years before Jeff stared making the cups. Jeff said that there is a characteristic of his cups, hallmarked or not, that anyone who knows anything about PF cups would recognize. I think he may be referring to the "Busby Lip," which is large and wide open all the time.

If I remember correctly, when I spent time with Frank, he said his PF cups were one of 6 silver sets Danny Dew had made.

The silver Paul Fox cups were only silver plated. I know who spun most of the cups for Danny. They did not do any silver spinning. The three companies who did such work for him were Marathon (very few sets, right at the beginning), Perigee (who did most of the cups) and Rings and Things. About a year ago, I was discussing the silver PF cups with someone else who had a set. He had convinced himself that his set was solid sterling silver. I knew that if anyone had spun a set of them in silver, it would have been Perigee. So I called them.
I asked if there was anyone there who still remembered Danny Dew. They put me in direct contact with the fellow who did the work. He informed me that Perigee NEVER did any spinning in solid silver. All of the silver Paul Fox cups were silver plated. I know the whereabouts of three sets. I have the ones that belonged to Bill Malone and the ones that belonged to Wilbur Kattner. Rafael Benatar got the set that I had called Perigee about. In the long run, silver plate makes a lot of sense. Copper, which is the base for the silver plated cups, is much less likely to dent than silver. And it's fairly easy to replate.

Could it be that these cups are named after a different Garcia? I have never seen them described as Frank Garcia cups only Garcia Cups. Tannens description mentions nothing about Frank Garcia. I think its probably just the designers name.

No. They were named after Frank. I hear from some of his friends that he thought it was a collossal joke.

That's really all there is any more. However, considering the close relationship Frank had with Tannen's, I think this has a bit more than a "rumor" behind it.
Tannen's had a history of issuing things without authorization. For example, the Connie Haden cups were originally going to be called the Slydini cups. Slydini did not want his name associated with a knockoff of a product made by a friend of his. So these cups basically died on the vine. Frank, on the other hand, enjoyed having publicity about himself, so much so, that he even appropriated other people's publicity material. And his plagiarism of material is very well documented. Check the Hierophant for details on this. Of course, they may have been named after Jose Garcia, who might have been the custodian at the old building where Tannen's was. Or they could have been named after the Garcia plumbing fixture company which may have been the manufacturer of these cups. Tannen's and Frank really deserved each other.

You nailed it. I remember writing a column about Spina's stealing of Ken Brooke's material and Spina wrote me a letter in response. His letter was so stupid and actually proved what a thief he was... so I published it verbatim.
