Dear fellow magicians,

I am trying to create an effect that is similar to the dream vision presentation, like getting an audience member up and describing a date , and the prediction matches the description ...

Hocus Pocus has this "Post card from the road" trick I guess that involves a chair and a hanging prediction...

I am interested in that but am concern if I would be able to do it alone on stage ...as I think the prediction has to be prepared at the very moment ..then maybe *** out...

I have tried performing similar routines using several commercial items (Lee Earle Sechuan Samplers, Andy Leviss Its a Match etc) and prepared the prediction before the show and hand it to someone in the audience..

I would like to create one method for the "date" kinda presention.

Any inputs is greatly appreciated...

Thanks...

I use the "Post Cards from the Road", and have had great success with it. I use it in my full evening show on the cruise lines and it's one of the most talked about effect in the show.

You do need to have an assistant though to make the magic happen. I have used a tech, or Dj, or anyone who can write with five minutes of instructions. It's really that simple. This is another example of packs small and plays big.

While Postcards from the Road is ultimately cheaper, I can attest to the Zimmerman Prediction Chest as an excellent substitute. I have seen the one made by Malloy and it is genius. It gives a Dream Vision routine but packs smaller.

On a previous thread, I posted that I worked with an illusion show that toured with a Don Wayne Dream Vision back in the mid-90's. I was really excited when we got it in, because it had been my favorite prediction effect up to that point in time, back around 1994. I first saw it live in Youngstown, Ohio in 1986.

Still love the effect to this day, but will most likely never add one to my show. For one reason, the need of an assistant to pull it off. I don't always perform with an assistant. Secondly, you will need at least a small U-Haul or very large van to transport this effect. Until we traveled with a large spike escape that were 3 large ATA cases, Dream Vision was one of the largest cases in our inventory. Thirdly, this is not your living room parlor effect. You will need a stage or at least a platform with wings to pull this off. If you aren't regularly performing on a stage, that this effect is a huge investment to sit in storage and to be used once or twice a year.

Someone else pointed me to this thread so that I would mention the routine I currently do. In a nutshell, I perform an imaginary trip to Vegas with 3 random members of the audience based on Larry Beckers Casino Royale. For the last four years, I have been performing an extended version of the routine with the prediction including the high rollers room that the hotel placed us in (using Don Wayne's Room Service gimmick) and the six winning Keno numbers (on a matching Keno ticket from the force hotel.) The Room Service key tag has also been changed to match the casino/hotel.

There is no doubt that Larry's routine stands on its own. But the reactions I have got since then, with the numbers on the key tag being pressed on (not written) and a folded up Keno ticket with the six matching numbers, have been gold for me. The hardest thing for me to figure out over a period of 14 months was how to be able to get three press on numbers on the key tag and record six Keno numbers in a solo act without any off stage assistants. I do everything now myself in front of the audience and it flies by them.

Back to "Postcards from the road": Does anyone know where I can find an on-line video of the actual performance of the effect. The description in MAGIC from Big Show F/X sounds great but I'm more of a visual person ???

Thanks and let me know.

I own a custom Malloy Zimmerman prediction... It's AMAZING! One of the best purchases I have EVER made! It allows you to predict ANYTHING!! Kinda pricey but well worth it.

The cool thing about it is you get a side table you can use! I use the table multiple times durring the show so the audience will not suspect it at the end. The problem I see with postcards is you have to introduce a wooden chair for the secrect move. How often have you see someone take a chair and have to use it as a step ladder?? Hmm.. That makes more sence!! Use a danggg step ladder for the secrect move. DUHHH!

Wade.... I use the chair in 3 different routines. Its a piece seen on stage most of the show, so nothing new to grab it and use it as a step stool... I can see if someone was so brilliant to only use the chair once to stand on. But its a much used prop through my show. I think that is why he made it a chair and not stepladder... so the chair could be used in other occasions to lighten the idea that it may be a prop.

Im actually modifying my shocking electric chair to become the chair used in postcards. It will be used in 4 routines, and each will shy away the idea that its a special chair.

Id love to have the zimmerman... but cant make myself spend that kind of cash when the same is accomplished much cheaper. Maybe one day though!
