I’m not sure where to post this question, but I think street performance/ strolling magic is appropriate.
For those of you who know what I am talking about, I am going to the Burning Man festival this summer and I would like to perform magic. I have been to Burning Man twice before, so I know what the conditions are like. I have been trying to come up with a repertoire of tricks that fit with the buzz of the festival (bizarre seems to sum it up well) and will not get ruined by the harsh weather and dust conditions. As much as I love card tricks, that would be a real no-no because the wind and dust and occasional rain will ruin a deck of cards. I could consider a trick with an old, worn out deck, but if the wind blows, then there go my cards. I think thread work or loops would collect dust and expose the thread. Also are there any Magicians out there who have been to the Burn? (Besides Jeff McBride?) Anyone perform there? Is anyone going in 2005? (It's never too early to plan!!!) |

That sounds like a sentence, wind, rain and dust.
You can always use some elastic bands around your table so you can slide your cards under it. Works in cold wet windy Briton. Hey you probably like it here as well. Mario |

I've been a whole bunch of times. I performed my Bizarre show at the Café in Central Camp.
Its a challenging venue. Here are some things to consider. Are you going to do a set piece or just walk around blowing peoples minds? The extreme weather conditions will play hell with your voice, you may want a battery powered amp. Card tricks work fine. Why are you worried about ruining a two dollar deck? Just bring extras. Don't bring anything too valuable...things get ruined out there. During the night, people there are very distracted, they may not want to watch a magic show. My conclusion was to do contact juggling, allowing people to come in and go as they please as opposed to get caught up in the narrative flow of the trick. A street style show would work very nicely in the center camp in the daytime. Duringthe day people are hanging out in the shade, and the heat is sapping their energy, they'll be grateful for something to watch. D'lites are terrific! |

Bro D.
Most of the people at this thing are naked (in a natural body is beautiful kind of way)or close to. No place to carry money. I guess you could still get tips but they would be things like; Tip, make sure you put sunscreen on your bits not accustomed to direct sunlight. It's not true that everyone is naked. There are a lot of naked people, but it is not a nuditst thing. I personally kept my clothes on-- being a conservative Putritan and all. But yes, there are naked people. And trampolines. And naked people on trarmpolines.
My plan is to perform walk around magic or street magic, or bar magic (at the camps that have a bar set up) or heck even magic on a trampoline. Anywhere that I could perform close up of "parlour magic." (Althought the term Parlour conjures up inages of pristine Victorian studies and mansions. That was not my Burning Man experience.) I brought a deck of cards last year and found that the dust ruined the deck. Not that that completely means that I can't do card tricks, but certain moves, like double lifts and Elmsley counts were unpredictable due to the wear and tear on the pasteboards. I feel that they would lynch a magician at the Café, unless he really fit the spirit of the festival. Zack, what was in your bizarre show? Was it well received? (Finally, am I in the right section for this post? Would I be better off moving to a new post?) |

Ok, Thanks Danny! I guess there are reasons why I don't know about some things. Not my styleof action.
That tip line, reminds of what we used to say after a bad day selling when someone would ask How did you do today? I would answer "I got two order today!.... Get out! and Stay Out!" <rim shot> BroDavid

It was definitely well recieved. People at the Café are generally chilling out from the heat and general craziness...they welcome a little light entertainment.
Forget about tipping. Nobody carries cash, and passing the hat probably violates the no commerce rule. |
