Name: "Strangers Like Me!"
Author: Peter Eggink Price: $35.00 direct from Peter Eggink http://www.petereggink.nl/dvd.html Publisher: PE Illusion Productions Date: 2004 Pages/Length: More than an hour with performances of the effects and the explanations. Difficulty: Various - but nothing too outrageous ( see below!) Out of 10: 8 Contents Artificial Experience This is a continuation of the well known effect "Misled" ( as performed by David Copperfield) or "Just Passing Thru'", but uses a borrowed pen and a borrowed banknote. The melt of the pen through the folded banknote is very visual due to Peter's clever thinking. This is perfect as a follow up to either Misled or Just Passing Thru', but can also stand as an effect on its own. Any situation where a card or similar object is to be signed with a borrowed pen could be the perfect situation to perform this little visual miracle. Imagine the situation in a shop where you borrow a pen to sign the credit card slip. The slip is signed and you can do the effect with the credit card slip itself or a borrowed note from the till, explaining the reason that you don't use cash being that it is definitely not to be trusted, not sound. Watch the eyes of the cashier as the pen visibly melts through the note, and watch the discount on your shopping as he/she begs you not to come back and shop again! Similarly this could be done impromptu in a restaurant when signing a bill for dinner. Use the waiter's pen and the tip note that you will then leave to the waiter. This will most probably be the most talked about tip the waiter will ever receive! Perfect for walk around as this begins and ends clean, and is set up as you speak! Transferred A signed card lost in the middle of the pack visually changes into a folded bill ( the signed card likewise is folded). The folded bill unexpectedly ends up in the middle of the pack. This is a neat idea and highly visual effect. Like most of Peter's work the emphasis is on natural ungimmicked impact. You will find in most of Peter's effects he uses signed or borrowed items - no suspicious "magic" apparatus. 3 Fry Three cards are removed from the deck and paper clipped together as a prediction. These are always on view all the time in front of the audience. Three more cards are chosen by the spectators - no forcing, and of course signed! These are lost in the pack. Turning back to the paper clipped cards, the magician reveals his prediction. The faces of the cards are shown to be the three signed cards which can be removed from the paper clip by the spectators. This has to be my favourite number on this particular DVD. It uses something that as a non-card magician I have never been able to find a use for! Very practical and sets up for continuation for table-hopping. few basic sleights needed which Peter explains in full. MeltChange A new style of card change which allows the card to "melt" into another without ever being covered. This has many uses and makes a refreshing change from the more known card changes. The change was most probably Peter's first effect that he marketed as a down-loadable video, which is no longer available due to "illegal" exchange of the site. Pull Off Signature This uses the MeltChange as described above. Visibly the signature is pulled off from a signed card. peter tells you how to make the "signature", and gives some neat ideas to use this - no more said here! Impromptu Coin thru' Bottle Although this is given as a bonus effect, it is very strong and should not be overlooked. A totally non-gimmicked version of the coin in bottle which can even be done with a signed coin ( there it is again!) and a borrowed plastic bottle. You end up clean ( of course you do as there are no gimmicks!). Comments Peter obviously had great fun in making this DVD and it shows! A very relaxed style, rather like a lecture, but highly entertaining! The effects are first performed ( each effect being a different chapter on the DVD) and the explanations are in separate chapters. All the effects should be able to be performed with existing materials, and if not are easily available from your favourite magic store ( Gareth - Magic Box for example!). Peter thoroughly covers all explanations, if at times the camera angles being somewhat difficult. Material for the close-up worker, but don't also forget to watch the credits as this will give you a rare glimpse of Peter's illusion show which he used to perform - it is worth buying this DVD if not for the magic ( which is pure, simple, direct and workable) but for the great looking girls in the illusion show! Keep up the great work Peter! |

I just received Strangers Like Me. I really like Transferred and the Impromptu Coin Thru Bottle. Great work.
With regards to the Melt Change, I'm a little skeptical of trying this for real people because it seems pretty obvious that the card just slides over. Any thoughts? |

Oh and by the way Peter, off topic, but I studied at Tilburg University for 5 months last year on an exchange program. Greatest experience ever!

I'd be interested in seeing the melt change on a demo video. Anyone know where I can find one?

I don't think there is one up anywhere. It's essentially a regular cover change that's done partially in the open with some tips of finesse. That probably confused the hell out of you but I try:)

I'm very interested in Peter Eggink's work. I've seen various online demonstrations of his skills in both technique and performance and would enjoy owning some of his material. Upon visiting his site, I noticed he was selling various gimmicked effects on their own as well as compiling them unto his DVD's. I was wondering if he demonstrated how to construct the necessary gimmicks in detail within his instructional videos or if one would have to purchase extra necessities to accomplish each effect. Please reply when time permits.
Very respectfully, Raymond Singson

You will most likely already have everything you need to perform the effects on Strangers Like Me. I don't know about the other DVDs.
