My pick for the three best buy books on card magic. For value - Price and material would be -
The card magic of LePaul by Paul LePaul. This book has the cards in the envelopes an effect that moved magic forward and was a trademark of Paul LePauls act. Also many other great close up magic and card moves. What makes this book great is that LePaul explained things from his act and things he used when he performed... Erdnase Expert at the card table. This is one of the finest books on magic. It is a great reference book that will stay with the student of card magic for years and years. And Erdnase shows the student the thinking and the bits of business that makes the reader feel that he has lived what he teaches. For price plus value this book is a must and one of the best buys in magic. The stars of magic... This book contains routines from the legends in magic. I was talking about this book with Bill Malone once and he said that every routine in that book was great and you could take any one of those routines in the stars of magic and do it for people. And If you do it well it will be a hit with the audience. The card and other routines in this book I feel are wonderful... For the cost of the books and what you get this is my pick for the three best buy books in magic! What would you choose?

One of my best buys has been ' The magic Book ' By harry Lorayne.(not a lot of cards) I've been able to use a lot of material from this book. Although it's not my favorite book it is great value for money, and very workable routines, I think I paid £20 from International Magic.

How about:
Bill Simon's Effective Card Magic for about $8 from Dover. The Commercial Magic of J.C. Wagner, $20 from most dealers. Yeah, there's some coin stuff in there, but it is mostly cards. As for the Dover reprints, you could also add Expert Card Technique and Royal Road. Both under $15 each. |

Expert at the Card Table is great too, of course. A real classic among card magic books.

The Magic Book (Lorayne) was my first ever book (magic book that is). I still use the method for the Magic Square!
Now my favourite three books are: The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley 1 and 2(Minch)- Great material, with some brilliant effects. The description of the Dazzle act is worth reading through, even if it would be difficult to recreate. Carneycopia (Minch)- Carney's thinking on magic is superb, and every one of the effects in this book has been thought out, and developed. There is probably something to everybody's liking in here. Natural Selections II (Acer)- Not a great "classic text", but this is certainly a funny book, with some great routines chucked in for good measure. Acer is a funny guy, and this still comes across well on the written page. I selected the three books for completely different reasons, 1 contains workable material, 1 contains practical thought provoking essays, 1 is funny! Owen |

I have to agree with card magic of LePaul. Great book for the price. I just picked up MINT vol. 1 for only $35. This is less than the original price, and it's been out of print for years. The biggest bargain I ever picked up? An auction at a small convention; The last word on Cards by Rufus Steele for around $5. Not a really big book and I think it's in L&L catalog for around $10. The cool part, the inscription by Rufus Steele, autographed to Walter Gibson. In the words of Daltry, "I call that a bargain, the best I ever had!"

Although there are several card college books, and they are not really cheap, you get a lot of sleights and better teaching than most. I'd say they were extremely good value.
Obviously Expert Card Technique is one of the best value. |

Two books that are PACKED with time-tested routines and have me grinning from ear to ear every time I think about them are:
"Mindsights" by Doug Dyment "Theatre of the Mind" by Barrie Richardson These are what magic books should be. You'll have to pry these books loose from my cold dead hands if you ever want them. Mike P.S. Probably my favorite all time set of books for value in both cost and content is "The Jinx", a 3 volume set of great magic from a by-gone era of magic. (the 1930-1940). Many routines were contributed by many famous magicians. Hundreds of effects and routines. All are so old...they are new. Cost? Can be picked up at a dealer for approx $90.00 and on eBay for approx $60.00.

Glenn, I would replace The Card Magic of LePaul with John Northern Hilliard's Greater Magic.
