I bought a couple of quartz replacement discs for watches at a jewelry repair shop, they had a large variety that can match diameter and thickness nearly perfectly.

I always get my glass discs from small magnifying glasses. There are many sizes if you look for them. I have one which is the size of a half Dollar and a Morgan Dollar size. I just find them in office supply stores.

I just discovered a great source for this. Just choose the thickness, then you can get precise diameter for just about any size coin you want.

Henry Hay's "Amateur Magician's Handbook" gives a "magician fooler" method which does not require the glass disc.

Folks, just saw this interesting thread, and I found a website that sells watch crystals (the glass faces), cheap. I haven't ordered from them yet, but it seems like this is what we're all looking for!

The problem with smooth glass is that people will notice the smoothness every time I used regular glass disk they knew it wasnt a coin... go to a stain glass window shop because the have glass they can cut half dollar size that's not so smooth on one side because it has a nice texture to it. the guy charged me $3 bucks a disc to make and took him ...

Hi you might want to consider how Downs did it.
It is in modern coin manipulation at archive.org search on google, and download the PDF from Archive.org. Do NOT TRY DOWNLOADING IT FROM ANOTHER SCAM WEB SITE, that asks you to download their scamware software. Archive.org is trustworthy. Downs did it with real coins, and his method of extracting them is ingenious. you can hand the glass to someone for inspection! sometimes, going back to 1900 is going forward. check it out. |

I did not find any bigger ones for a half dollar but I think the quarter size is a better idea in adapting the trick as written since the script calls for a borrowed coin. Recall that Tarbell is choosing the tricks specifically to teach particular principles, with his end goal being that the student utilizes these principles to create their own effects later. In this case, comparing the books to the original course, he appears to place emphasis on the lighting angles when it comes to the glass coin. For this it seems like a plastic disc would be *okay* for practice purposes while waiting to find that perfect flashlight lens.

*Potential drawback to this size- finding a matching receptacle. 1" is really small.

I found the clear glass (not plastic) discs, in both quarer and half dollar size, at Magic Inc:

You need the disc to be glass for Roth's vanish in water glass. I also think glass has a better feel (weight and temperature) for all of the coin effects needing "omni" style coins. The discs from magicinc.net are also perfect for tarbell, the original post question.

SandyWeber's tips worked fantastic for quarter-ish size. $1.99 for 25 glass disks and a dollar for the drain cleaner. No shipping required if you live near a craft store such as Michael's or a Walmart that carries them. I already had paint stripper but it may not be necessary as the draino seemed to get everything off including some black spots I missed on two of the disks.
These disks after being processed made a nice clink too.

Just noticed that in "Malini and his magic" by Dai Vernon there is a method given to avoid the issue mentioned here of different feel.
