That's the first time I messed that up again. Got that one from Karl Norman, not sure if it originates elsewhere.
Pull out a piece of paper and read it silently, but at the bottom, read out loud, "For 8 and up". Then count the spectator's and say, "ohh, there's only 7 of us here, that's why it didn't work". (of course, change the 8 to whatever number is above the number of spectatorsm unless it's a huge audience, then don't use this one). |

If I mess up a self working trick I rip the deck and perform a mutiple torn and restored transpo.

Just for the record, it shouldn't matter if the trick's self working or not. To the audience, it's all you.

My favorite line for a botched trick..."Hey, if I was good, I'd be in New York City! Just think what you'd be missing!"

I would say, "practice more."
I'll be honest and admit that I've botched a few tricks too. And I don't think ANY joke really makes up for it. The reason is that the audience still expects you to "make good". They think it's all part of the act. They think you're PRETENDING to mess up, and then when you've gotten a few laughs, you will show that it was all just a gag and then blow them all away. That's what magicians are supposed to do. Take the Knife Through Coat. Doesn't the magician act like he's botched up the trick for laughs and then at the end make good? That's what the audience expects a magician to do every time. So when a magician really DOES botch up a trick, make no mistake, it's a disappointment. No "funny line" will really make up for it. They think the "funny line" is part of the act, part of the magician "pretending" he's messed up, just before he really makes good, and when he doesn't make good, its a disappointment. |

"Does anybody know how to do this?"
or Look at a spectator and exclaim, "You sir, are a spy!" Gather up the torn pieces and hunker away. or "Will The Cards Match? ...obviously not....." Day 30/31

MagicalArtist, that's PRECISELY why we never tell them what's going to happen before you begin. I have a lot of regulars watch my act. The best compliment I have ever received from them has been "Don't you ever mess a trick up?" I said "No". The honest answer is of course "Yes".
Here is how I have attempted to solve the "trick messes up" dilemma... In my act I use three effects where it appears I have gone wrong but of course the mistake is "magically" corrected. The second effect I do is ALWAYS a trick of this nature which sets the precedence. If something does go wrong, later I have the ability to use this against them, I just act like it's part of the show and get out of the trick magically (being well versed in sleight of hand helps as does planning for a trick to fail during rehearsal). After another trick or two I put in the other "magician goes wrong" trick (I should mention that I drop one of the three that I plan to do). The rule of three is intact and the audience is none the wiser. I respect everyone on here and their opinions but the WORST thing you can do is admit you messed up. Fix it and get on with the act! If you can't fix it make it a part of the next effect (as was mentioned in Mr. Nadworthy's post). The best thing to do like I mention is PLAN FOR THE EFFECT TO FAIL! I f you can create a magical out for you to take in a routine that can go wrong you are way ahead of the game. Jason Wethington |

Though I fortunately have not yet had the opportunity, I like the idea of pulling out the Sleeping Queen after a trick's gone wrong. Say something to the effect of, "Wow, that last one even put my cards to sleep." Then wake her back up and move on.

If you play it exactly like you would if you made the mistake on purpose you can sometimes recover the trick.
I sometimes ham it up saying "Oh , nooo. " with a wink and a smile. Then the audience thinks I'm a little too cool and collected to be concerned about having failed. For example if I actually lose the card I was controlling, and I hadn't forced the card. I ask them to identify their card, and then tell them that I always have trouble with that card, and then take the card and do three or four card changes to show that it is a very difficult card to identify. (of course that is why I generally use a force) Mind you there are times when it is quite clear that you stuffed up. Like when my pen's end fell off and stuck to the metal table. I just had to sneer at the pen and say "Cheap Aldi Props" ( I did get it in Aldi ) |
