Hey Gary,

Just remembered... I used to teach biochemistry at UT... It is basically a derivative of the compound that they use in baby diapers! Everytime I change my son...I think "hey he has slush powder in his pants!" silly but true!

I hope this help,

Slush powder's scientific name is polly-acrolate. It is the same stuff that is used in baby diapers.

I don't know what it's made of, but if you have some and it becomes hard over time, put some in the microwave and it will take the hardness away.

I'm not sure I can do this without violating any secrets here, but since I'm not specifically mentioning any routines, I'll give it a go.
Basically, you pour it into any water based liquid, and it instantly congeals into a gel-like(?)solid .. or maybe something even harder. You can use your imagination as to what that might be useful for.

Polly-acrolate can be purchased from science companies in a 100 lb bag for around $200.00.

I buy it in 100lb bags and it says POLYACRYLATE only on the side of the bag. It may be Sodium Polyacrylate, but it only says POLYACRYLATE on the bag.

Am I completely missing what a magician would need 100 pound bag of Slush Powder for? Would be helpful in a flood I suppose......

I put it in my own packaging and sell it, but I use it nearly every show for water roulette and go through a ton of it so it pays off in the long run.

I used my 100 pound bag to disappear lake Erie once. Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile

And afterward I walked to the Canada. Smile

Actually, it only took half a bag. (I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the other half).

The manufacturer I found sold it in 55 Gallon drums. (Really!)(and it seems like it was around $95/drum, but you had to pay shipping.)

But I talked him into selling me only 5 pounds, and I have slush powder for life.

God Bless
Steve Smile

Ps Water Roulette Smile ??? Sounds interesting, care to share?

I assume this stuff is close to the same but, what is "instant snow?" I assume its like slush powder but only a little different.

Edd, instant snow is different from slush powder. It is a different effect, and you get a different result when you add water to it. When you add water to instant snow, it greatly expands and your spectators are actually supposed to see it. It sort of resembles a baking soda volcano. Personally, I haven't found any good use for the stuff yet, although I have to admit that I haven't really thought about what it would be good for either.
