What would you do? I was booked a month in advance for 30 minutes of close up before a seminar was to take place. Turned out to be 20 to 25 people huddled in close for one 30 minute set. My dilemma was on the day of the performance I was hit full on with a cold. Didn't want to cancel but potentially infected everyone there. Aside from a congested voice, my condition wasn't reflected in the performance, every one had a great time. The director of the event was aware of my condition before I arrived when he called to confirm the times, he wasn't concerned. I only really thought about this afterwards, I didn't even consider a replacement, but should have. I just thought "The show must go on." I only had a verbal agreement to do this so no recourse if I canceled, just rude. In a similar situation, non restaurant venue, replacement unobtainable, would you cancel ?

Well, as a sight gag, you could have performed in a surgical mask and lampooned the Masked Magician. I actually used that once and, during the show (for a large Japanese manufacturer, no less) broke into a severe sweat and a lady said, "Can I be your attending nurse?" I nodded and she took a napkin and actually wiped my brow during the trick!
She (and the audience) thought it was part of the show! Sometimes a little protective cover can go a long way to enhancing the comedic possibilities of your show. Lee Darrow, C.H.

"Who wants to win $100?" That gets their attention and draws them in. See here:

Can't say that I'd cancel.
Ya know, after dating a server in fine dining restaurants for several years, I've learned that servers go to work sick. They can't afford to take a week off in December just because they have a cold. I can't really blame them. . . 9 times out of 10, they probably caught something from little Timmy or another customer. If you had the flu, NO. But you can control the symptoms of a cold pretty well with medicine, and the gig was only 30 minutes... |

The surgeons mask would have worked fine. Great suggestion Lee.

Glad you liked it! It's become sort of a gag withme and one restaurant owner I work for on occasion. I use it more for formal show situations than strolling situations.
Otherwise, someone might think I was there to rob the party! Lee Darrow, C.H.
