Hi folks.
I'm toying around with an idea of putting a routine together using only a wand and some Balls taken from Cups&Balls. Thus I'm looking for a good book teaching wand spins and vanishes. Is there a book specificly on that topic or do I have to stick with a "normal" C&B book, and if yes, which book would you recommend? Please note that I'm note interested at all in DVD's, I don't like sitting in front of my tv when practising. thanks a lot yfirum |

Michael Ammar has the wand spin in his C&B book, as well as his Ammar magic book. He also has the drummer's spin and several other good wand vanishes in these books (thourgh the fist, Williamson's striking vanish) The explantion in the Dai Vernon Book of Magic is not as complete as it might have been. Cellini has a nice spin in his OOP book, The Royal Touch. I have just orderd the drummer's book, Spinology, fancy spins for drumsticks that I hope to apply to my wands.

I don't know of any books specifically on wand spinning. The nearest thing to it may be drumstick spinning:
DRUMSTICK SPINOLOGY The complete method to spinning drumsticks 80 pages plus 56 minute DVD ISBN: 0-9705342-0-5 The website has a demo video if you click on the image of the book. Not all of the moves will be suitable, but some could be applied to wand spins. The website is: http://www.drstix.com/index.html Good luck! Richard

Thanks for your recommendations. I heard about the drumstick spinology but it doesn't suit me because drummers don't use vanishes (where did my basedrum go?).
but thanks anyway. Anyone who maybe could second david thoughts on Ammars book or bring another good suggestion? thanks yfirum |

There is no reason that the spinology book shouldn't be of use to you. After all, you can adapt other spins to use with vanishes. It's up to you to figure some of this out for yourself.
But Ammar's book is about as good a reference as you will get. The DVD's are better, though.

Michael Ammar explains the wand spin very well - it's also found on the Cups and Balls DVD (Stevens Magic).
I know you said you don't like to sit in front of the TV while practising - but even the best write-up and illustrations take second place to a well taught sequence on DVD - especially as you can slow it down and re-run etc. Good luck Riley |

The DVD is really good! He really breaks down the steps and also gives you stuff which you can add to your routine if you wish.

It is also explained in the Vernon DVD's "Revelations." You can see Vernon giving Ammar some extra tutelage on the spin.

David Williamson has a good wand spin, too. Different from Vernon's.

Are your wandspins for flourishes or for vanishes. If its just for vanishes the spinology book wouldn't be for you. I'm not aware of too many wand vanishes anyway. There's the vernon wand spin (aka silent mora). The striking vanish. The through the fist vanish. And that's about it. I would think that anything else is just a flourish or variation on these 3. I could be wrong though.
The Spinology book is great though. The flourishes in it are excellent. The DVD is even better. If you're putting together a wand and ball routine and you wanted to add some flourishes to misdirect and add flavor to the routine the spinology book would be the one to get. Eric Falconer Houston TX

I've been working on the Vernon Wand Spin for months now. Thanks to Bill Palmer looking at a video that I did it is much better.
It's still not perfect. I'm not ABOUT to ask Bill to see another until I believe that it is absolutely perfect. At that point I'm sure that Bill will point out the OTHER glaring mistakes that I'll be making. I think the world of that man. |

I agree with Bill, you're very unlikely to find an entire text on vanishes using wand spins - your best bet is to adapt other stick spins. If you're just doing a wand and ball routine you're going to want to do flourishes - and won't want to vanish a ball with every spin.

Okay, then . . . what about this?
Has anybody actually managed to finesse the Joachim Solberg vanish as per the Ammar book. I had the VHS tapes at one time, but it was not covered there. I have virtually no trouble with any sleight or handling (Ray Kosby's ordinance the ridiculous exception to the rule). Is there something in the explanation that is either unclear, missing or otherwise? If it's just me, I'll cop to it. But a MIke Rogers baseball does not bounce the way it nedds to, apparently. |

Thanks a lot for your advise!
I'll first stick to Ammar's book as it seems to be a good choice. you are right about the fact that I'll need some flourishes and not only vanishes. because of that the spinology books seems interesting, maybe I'll get it later on. anyway thanks for guiding me into the right direction. yfirum |
