Greetings,
I used a pretty simple method for a couple of years: dig a slight well to the side of the wick. Put 2-3 drops of water in that well. The lit candle wick will eventually soak up the water, the flame will hiss and pop, stretch, and finally, slowly shrink down to a pinpoint and go out. You can also just wave a drop of water onto the candle next to the wick. It takes a moment to draw the water up the wick and kill the flame. Try it out. It's also darn hard to re-light the candle. One time I did have someone whip out a lighter and try to light it a few times. He gave up as "the spirit demands darkness." Twas a lovely moment. Sincerely, Sam Haine

See Invocation Volume One for Andruzzi's solution to this problem. His solution is clever and visual, but not a stand off at the other side of the room method, by any means.

It's also the last time I performed it -- the method Corinda suggested is failure prone, and the bit must be played quickly after lighting the candle -- the odds of failure increase proportionately to the length of time the candle burns. The other methods are pretty dicey too, in my experience. The problem with both is the slow rate of wick consumption; most of the flame, of course, is produced by the burning, vapourized wax, not the wick, which is simply a conduit for the fuel. Snipping the wick leaves a slow burning segment with a long & variable burn time; the segment may also continue to burn even after falling. I've burnt a lot of time on R&D with this one, and have yet to find a satisfactory, controllable candle snuff. All of my experiments have involved real candles. If I were to take this one up again, I'd create a fake from plaster or aluminum and work on limiting the actual fuel (perhaps using Sterno or equivalent). Leland |

Sam....
I performed the effect last nite.... a Goddess of mine left the room, and she had a candle burning as we often do...she always leaves a bottle of water on her coffee table to spray the ever curious cat when he acts up....so I poured a little bit in the already formed well( in other words, I didn't need to dig one) and it stayed lit to my suprise...when she returned, almost catching me, I said "in a few moments the candle will go out," she said "yeah right your tricks aren't that good, baba." and Lo! and behold, brother, about 3-4 min. later, it went out in a dramatic "SIZZLE"....she was absolutely astounded, and said "get out of here with that sh**!...she is still bewildered, and I thank you bro. Sam for this absolutely amazing feat! and your right, its nearly impossible to re-light it, but this only adds to the mysterious nature of the stunt....needless to say, she says I owe her another "scented" candle! Peace..... |

Strange how this thread has gone on for so long without mention of this. Perhaps the simplist method I've heard is along the lines of the above. You slip a small chip of ice near the wick of the burning candle. The ice melts, then acts as above. Upon subsequent examination, melted ice and melted wax are largely indistinguishable.

Hmmm....
Allow me to chime in here with some ideas: To extinguish the flame, you could heat a long rod, insert it along the wick making a 'channel'. Now attach some IT to the bottom of the wick, and light the top. When you want the flame to go out, pull on the IT, pulling the wick into the channel you made, extinguishing the flame. This is a vague description, and this is intentional as with some experimentation you can make this more 'you'. I know it isn't impromptu, but it works. If you wanted it impromptu, blowing it out would work, as would bringing a small piece of dry ice near the flame. Working in bars for any length of time introduces you to some strange drinks, and one such drink is the Flaming Lamborgini. When I first saw (read DRANK) this drink, I learned that cinnamon sprinkled on a flame creates lots of sparks that rise up. Very cool, and just another idea for you to play with. Sean |

In my humble opinion, why would you want to go thru the trouble of using IT on a flame? when you can just go to the sink and use water...
verily, of all the ideas, I would say that water/ice are definitely the best..try them, Im sure you'll agree... |

OK I will give you a good idea but I do caution to do so since if you know my posts, know that I feel the secrets are too free on the Café. Do you know that one or two of the ideas was little known and only shared amoung small numbers since it is so simple but so good?
Please Please do not flame me, I just wish these types of posts would be kept to secret sessions. I feel all too many of the magicians at the Café recall that ANYONE can read this magicians or the curious. That said- Some mentioned CO2 in two forms. Now the OP did not say HOW impromptu he needs to be if I recall. Should only the candle be impromptu or does both the performer AND the candle need to be ready at a momment. If not, an good way to blow out a candle using CO2 is with a bladder under the arm and a tube a the edge of the sleeve. depending on HOW you do it, the distance could be further than you think or it could be just a nice magical pass over the flame and it goes out. You can figure out the rest. |

LMAO procyon rising has something going there! Reminds me of the time at my old house when I stuck that metal mug in the microwave.........but anyways! Get a squirting bow tie and use the squirting part to blow air....take it off the tie and hide it somewhere....maybe glue it to the candle point up witht he rest of the tube going under a place mat and into your lap so you can squeeze and...total darkness.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned coffee creamer. It sparkles when lit. Mghia, I agree with you but there is a trend here to dig up old threads and post things like "good luck" and "I agree" and "Please PM me the secret too!" in order to rack up 50 posts in 2 days and have access to Secret Sessions.

Not really impromptu and only marginally on subject but fun to try...
take a standard to small oil lamp. Fill it 1/3 with standard oil, 1/3 with lighter fluid & 1/3 with water... they will all seperate and burn in order... meaning you will have a very high wild flame from the lighter fluid which burns quickly... in a few moments the flame will tame itself into a small calm orange flame from the oil and when burned through the oil the water extinguishes... Its a bit touchy to work with but deffinetly worth it. You can also add oil desinged to burn in different colors which is nice enjoy.

Hi Everyone. I've been reading this thread with interest because it reminds me of a situation I was in some years ago. I was hired to do a magic-seance for a private party, and one of the effects was the self-extinguishing candle, using a hidden reservoir of water inside the candle. After testing many candles, I reached the point where I could expect the flame to go out after about ten minutes.
On the night of the show, however, ten minutes went by and the candle flame remained. Twenty minutes. A half hour. I had run through my entire script. The candle had burned well past the reservoir. Finally I decided to bail out: I asked each person, in turn, to bid the spirits farewell. On the last person, the candle sputtered and went out. I suppose I should have thanked the spirits for saving me at the last minute. But I was too exhausted by the ordeal. When I arrived home, I tried repeatedly to recreate what went wrong with the candle. On my fifth or sixth try, I managed to do it: The water, released from its hidden cavity, formed a sort of bubble in the melted wax on top of the candle. The water-bubble stayed there, floating on the surface of the liquefied wax -- right next to the wick! -- while the candle happily burned away. It was only when the bubble, by some random process, finally came in contact with the wick that the candle went out. So. Speaking from experience: The ol' water method is not entirely surefire. |

I've tried the coffee creamer with no results. Also, I have tried the flour. I felt like a complete sucker! LOL.
To Extinguish a candle, I use a bulb secured at my armpit, with a little tube attached to one of my shirt buttons. so, whenever I want it to go off, I simply press my arm againts my body.

So, I know we've worn this thread out, but last night I was at "Michaels" craft store, and they have candle making kits there...
so all you have to do is make up a few with an extra short wick...then it'll go out for sure!! Its really cheap too... |
