Where would one start to re-address the balance? How can live acts claw there way back into the hearts and minds of the public as a whole?

Some might say that television shows such as Fear Factor and Survivor are stealing the EAs thunder but I'm not finding that so. On the contrary. I'm finding that show like these stimulate folks to move toward escape events because they want more of the rush they get when they see something they couldn't/wouldn't do and say, "Oh!" "Ick!" "I'd could never do that..." Just my 2 cents.

I don't see why we should not compare with movies and such. We still offer some of the best LIVE entertainment available. People know that the movies are special effects and computer graphics. With us it is still amazement because there are no special effects or computer graphics. It is the real deal. People also want something different. Not the same stuff all the time.

Roslyn,
I think that we "compete" with movies and television in the sense that there is an old saying, "There's only one show business." What that means is that whether we are talking about an action picture, a live Shakespeare performance, a lap dance or a demonstration of kitchen appliances, it is a show. There are common elements that make these performances more or less effective. In live performance the primary element is the stage presence and personality of the performer. The camera sees things differently, but notice that there are really only a few big movie stars in any particular category, and no one can substitute for them (e.g., Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, Julia Roberts, Uma Thurman). The very hardest thing about escapes for me was discovering what makes them interesting. Stripped of the trappings, a guy shows up with a bunch of stuff that he brought with him. People put it on him, and he takes it off. That sounds pretty dumb, right? So it's about the trappings, and about the fundamental human need that these performances address. We are presenting a physical metaphor for all the confinements that the audience faces. Perhaps they don't think they have enough money. Perhaps they made some bad decisions earlier in their life that have trapped them. If they could just figure out a way to overcome this one stupid obstacle that is blocking them from having the life that they want... Yours, Paul |

Good words Paul. I think the lurkers and Layman should read this one.

Plus we're tapping into the primordial fear of literally 'being trapped.' We see people in movies, TV or news reports restrained in some horrendous arrangement and think, "Egad! That would be horrible! I hope I never wind up in that spot (shudder)!"
