I was wondering how anyone deals with performing a few hours of strolling magic, and then doing a larger stage show for the same group. Do you connect the two different types of magic at all, or do you treat them as two seperate things? Are there thematic threads to connect the two different performances?
If the audience has just seen you do strolling magic, and are later going to watch your stage show, do you in any way use this previous viewing to your advantage? I could imagine setting up a running gag, or possibly beginning an idea, that is later brought to a conclusion in the stage show. Does anyone do anything like this? Or have you considered such ideas? -- Robert

Yes, strolling and stage magic can be connected. The character that I'm playing is the easiest way for me to tie the two shows together rather than looking for specific themes.
What if you find a bunch of magic tricks that seem to belong together, but don't fit your performing personna? Go create a new character so that you can try new things!

If you perform any mental effects you can set up one of them while strolling, book test, ect, also if you do pick pocked routines you can pick your victems while strolling,....who has the right watch ect...
they are not conected unless you want them to be. |

Thanks for all the comments. I think using a character is a good way to connect the two shows, and I like the idea of setting up a mental effect while strolling.
One thing that lead to me asking this question, was the creation of familiarity with a prop or concept in the strolling show, with assumptions that are later shown to be incorrect. For example if during the strolling magic one performs a version of the midas dream, and then in the stage show, begins with a large container of coins, there becomes a conceptual linkage between the close up view of strolling and long shot view of the stage show. Like a change of point of view due to editing in film. This change from a close up to a distant shot, comes with certain assumptions about the coins and the container. The stage show could then reinforce these assumptions, or play against them. Obviously the midas dream is just an example, but I think the possibilites are very interesting. I guess the next step is to work this out in practice. :)
