Somehow I doubt someone's going to ask me what my favorite tapes or dvds are, figuring--with, I admit, some justification--that a librarian might prefer books. This is ironic, since this is the one category where I have the clearest favorite: the four-volume Alex Elmsley set put out by L&L. The tricks are performed with wit and charm--with some otherwise unreleased items as a welcome bonus--and the spoken bits are articulate and illuminating. I've watched these over and over, and whenever I see yet another video series that strip-mines the labor of others without adding much in the way of refinement (or even pictures of the actual creators on the video box), I always tell myself that the whole enterprise is redeemed by being able to watch these four tapes.

One should remember that Gordon Bean was the video reviewer for Genii in 1999, just before that other fellow, whose name escapes me, took over.
The elmsley seyt is absolutely first rate. In my January 2001 column on the best videos of all time the Elmsley set was number 11. I had the great honor of meetiing and spending some time with the great man himself at the MacMillan International convention about a month ago. Any other recommendations, Gordon? Actually, I suspect that one of my favorite dvds will be one I haven't even seen yet: David Williamson's Magic Farm. I know he's been holding back a lot of this material for years, and his stuff is never less than stellar. (I know it might seem strange that I haven't seen something that's been out for a few months, but it's been a pretty busy time in the library.)
