Mike, there is not such thing as "too big". Some of us keep our doves in 24" square cages and other have full size aviaries outside. I used to keep mine is a separate room in my basement. The entire room was the cage. A large parrot cage should be just fine for 4 doves as long as the space between the bars is smaller than the dove.

Hi Mike,
As Dave said, there is no such thing as too big. You might want to keep an eye out for aggessive behaviour with 4 doves in the same cage though. The males will often compete for dominance and you could end up with a bald dove on your hands. If that happens, look into splitting the cage into two and separating the doves accordingly. Good luck and enjoy the birds. Rob |

Rob,
Ok thank you. I am ordering them from Dakota Rose. So maybe I might just see what happens then. Thanks Mike |

I too think bigger is better. Typical woman huh? lol
But seriously, I have seen doves kept their entire lives in a 24 “ square cages and it breaks my heart. I currently house my one and only dove in a parrot cage. She flies, has room for nests, ground space to “peck” at (I sprinkle seed there for her to find) and exercise. She gets to perform all the natural behaviors a dove possess which would not be possible in a 24 “ cage. Hugs and Hissessss Maria |

I feel similar to Maria. They really should be able to fly in their cage. I have 10 doves in a parrot cage, but it is a large cage, with plenty of room to fly around. I have another 6 in a similar cage as well. Petsmart sells these cages for around $300 USD. It can be a little expensive, but it's worth it for the sake of your dove... remember...

Thank you, Dave I have seen those kind of cage on eBay. I found one that is nice. I show it to Dave Scribner and I showed Dakota Rose he said it would be big enough. I got a really good deal on it to $56+shipping for it. So soon I will have some doves.
Thanks Mike |

I have a dove book that says it is better to have a cage with width rather than heighth. Just wanted to know if you dove experts agree or not.

Regan,
I agree. Doves walk more than they fly. They eat off the ground in nature. Many even nest on the ground. I think that having more floor space also helps them to stay cleaner. They will not be forced to have other birds perched directly over them. Even in the 8'x8'x8' walk-in aviaries we have, the doves are more likely to be on the ground than purched or flying. Thanks Bob.
Somehow I knew I would hear from you when I mentioned Dove Expert! I just didn't know who would respond first, you or Dave Scribner. :) Regan

Regan,
What happens if Dave and I agree? Dave's busy being the "most fun Granddaddy" for Miss Lily. Doves don't smile! Bob Magic By Sander |

Bob,
I don't know the answer to that question.

Bob and I always agree. If we disagree, we agree to disagree. Whew! too much coffee this morning. I have a few birds that almost never perch except when they eat. They love the floor of the cage. I've always just made sure they had enough room to fully flap their wings for excercise.

Thanks for clearing that up Dave. I heard you have been frantically trying to teach some of your doves to smile so it would prove to everyone that Bob has finally made a mistake.

Regan,
There is a picture of Miss Lilly with Dave. Doves don't smile like that. It looks to me like Grandpa Dave isn't unhappy at all. I'm surprised he didn't respond, "What doves?" Bob Click here to view attached image. |

Bob,
I will definitely agree 110% with that statement...even Dave could never train a dove to smile that beautiful! Regan
