Hi all,
I'm working on adding more pickpocking work to my act. My watch steal works very well for me and I absolutely love the necktie steal. I have Jim Ravels book which I've read a million times and really quite enjoy. I have two questions: Does anyone happen to be a regular pickpoket magic performer who would be willing to pass a few bits of working advice on? And which sources have you found to be most informative? Thanks, Chris.

Do a search using the word 'pickpocketing'. I'm sure the 'Encyclopedia of Pickpocketing' dvds 1-4 has been reviewed on there. Unfortunately I don't perform any pickpocketing but I'm sure you'll get lots for information from the search,

Hi. I to have been interested in pick pocketing ever since I saw Greg Wilsons "On the Spot" dvd, where it has a section on watch steals and other items like pens and glasses.. You watch these things and you think, they must know you're doing it, but the truth is... they don't. With enough misdirection, which I found out by doing it to an old guy in a bar (I knew this person) (before I get any posts calling me a thief,) and I even put his glasses on and he didn't know they were his and I had taken them... (maybe he just couldn't see without them... lol) Anyway there is plenty of dvd's available out there, it's much easier I think learning from dvd's then a book, but check out Penguin Magic. They have some cool stuff on there, like watch steal dvd's...

You could try Apollo's site. It's just being put together, but there is contact info there. Why not see if Apollo would be willing to assist you?

A great watch steal video is "The Watch Steal Video w/ Chappy Brazil and Charles Bach" I came across this treasure about 4 years back, they gave really good tips on practicing and how to present the stolen watch, I would advise that anyone who wants to start learning to get this video, it was one of my favorites and I got a lot of mileage out of it ^_^

Try Greg Wilson - "On the Spot" I love it...
"Playful Pickpocketing - Rob your spectators blind - they'll love your for it it. Greg demonstrates how close-up Pickpocketing can transform the audience's definition of you as an entertainer and erase the lines between performer and audience." "Ticker Taker - A super-simple and perfectly motivated watch steal that doesn't take tons of testosterone to perform. Learn how to repeat steal a spectator's watch up to 4 times in a row." Best regards |

I really don't recommend Greg Wilson's Watch Steal. I thought the 'On the Spot' DVD was great but Ticker Taker was too awkward with the change of positioning in the middle.

If you want to be a GOOD pickpocket, study Chappy Brazil rather than Apollo Robbins. Apollo is a friend of mine but he is no Chappy... Apollo doesn't get the character or reasoning behind pick pocketing and just does a bad version of it. You need a real reason to touch people. Apollo says he will pickpocket you... the surprise is gone and people are impressed but not amazed. Pickpockets are invading leaving very little respect for the spectators... its not magic.

Hi all,
Hrm... Does that mean Apollo is more of a pickpocket/entertainer rather than magician/entertainer? But one thing you gotta admit... Apollo's got skill... Although I have not seen Chappy Brazil perform, so I guess I'm not in a position to judge anything. =/ Saw Apollo Robbins on Discovery Travel & Adventure though... something about being careful about pickpockets when going on holidays... He was great, really skillful but he was caught by this old lady on a bench... Kinda funny seeing her reaction actually. Cheers, Shan |

I have to say the Apollo is fantastic. If you want a really thorough and well produced dvd on pickpocketing, you should check out James Freedmans Stealing the Show. It contains everything from misdirection and timing to how to steal or place objects from every conceivable pocket.

Apollo is talented he awsome but I will never get over how good Chappy was. I like apollos magic skills. Im just not a fan of pickpocketing Ive seen and experienced some bad situations like when something comes up missing its the pickpockets fault this is a horrible feeling.
