Hi,
I'm Jack Skalon and also live in Naperville, IL. My main source of income (now) is music. That was my profession for years until 1991. I was an IT professional for 12 years, but my position was recently eliminated. I decided to go back into music full time. Music and Magic have been my 2 main loves as far back as I can remember. After quite a few years away from magic, my interest is renewed with a ferver (thanks in part to my grand kids). In 1992, I lost pretty much everything related to magic that I started gathering since the 60's in a flood. That was a drag, but I am having a ball replacing what I lost. It's amazes me that I've forgotten so much. Cards and close-up are my main concentration, but I love it all. It's really interesting to me how different it is for me this time. In the past, I just learned tricks per se. Now I really want to learn and master (as much as possible) the art. I am interested in joing SAM or IBM or some local club to really learn. Finding this place is like hitting a gold mine. It's a great place for info. I hope I can contribute to this group in some way. Even though I have been in an out of magic for a long time, I consider myself a novice and don't have much to offer. Thanks, Jack

Hi Jack,
Welcome and thanks for the introduction. One of the banners at the Café gives info on joining the IBM so you may want to click on it. As for your interest you may want to check out the card workers forum to start. Please feel free to post or ask a question of your own. So grab a coffee, a comfortable chair and be prepared for lots of reading. Have fun! |

Hi Jack,
I went to school (hs) near naperville - have you heard of IMSA? It's funny, I'm in IT too, been in it for two years after graduating from college out here in the Bay Area. I might go to grad school and try to finance it with some magic on the side. Chicago has a rich history of magic - I'd love to find some sources on it. Have you ever come across any? Best of luck out back home in the midwest. And stick around here - this is a great website. maurice |

Hi Maurice,
IMSA doesn't ring a bell. Where is it located? Chicago does have a rich history in magic. I'm just getting back into it and tracking down everything I can get my hands on. One of the first things on my list is tracking down all the shops, clubs, meetings ,and places where magicians are performing. Let me know if you ever make it back to the Chicago area. You're right about this site. It's incredible! Jack

Hi Jack, (wouldn't want to greet you in an airplane!)
IMSA is located in aurora...il. math & science acad. ... we used to go the AMC theaters in Naperville, and Boca Burrito... I make it back to chicago maybe once a year (usually Christmas). If I ever visit I'll definitely let you know! =) One tip - I used to only check out the card magic threads, but I started looking around a bit and thanks to the 'penny for your thoughts' thread I've got a seed of interest in mentalism firmly planted now... And another thing I love about this site, that you really can't get anywhere else, are the stories about famous (and not-so-famous) magicians of yore...Pete Biro has a bunch of stories about goshman, vernon, etc., as do other magicians. I love reading that stuff. If you ever find some interesting sites about magic in Chicago, pls. do pass them along! take care, maurice |
