Does anyone remember my pal Ray Mertz from The Forks Hotel in Buffalo??? Once Ray and I were at a restaurant in West Webster, NY performing for the lay folks during the CEMK convention about 20 years ago. Ray was doing a bowl routine with a huge steel nut (as in nut and bolt) as the final load (Ray swore he removed it from the HH Bridge going into NYC from Jersey - I was always a little nervous after that driving across it). The tables at the restaurant were made of thick glass. I was in another room when I heard a loud crash and the sound of glass breaking. Ray had dropped the nut on the table and it went right through the glass table and hit the floor. He was a great guy and a million laughs besides being a fine magician and sleight of hand artist. I sure do miss him!!! He was scared that they were going to make him pay for the table but they were good natured about it. I think the restaurant was called the China Palace or something close to that. Ray said that after that he always held his large nut a lot tighter after that.

To me that bowl look 'lightweight' and 'ugly' because of the sections..BUT, that is SOLELY my own look at it.. I do understand if others would love it.. As a tool for this routine, it might well be great and usefull, I just personally wouldn't buy it after having seen this picture... Quote: Yes Pete..and it is a great idea..

Pat Page does it beautifully, as anything else he does! Forgot to mention, the way he does hide a sponge in that routine (on top of the b***, whilst picking it up, is a work of art) Quote: His name is very familar to me..Though I've never seen him working.. Mike Mike, your dad Lou, Ray, Harrison Carroll and I had some great times in Buffalo over the years. Those were some wonderful days. Your dad rescued me one night. We commandeered Ray's car and he took me back to the motel I was staying in and left Ray and Harry doing magic behind the bar. I never heard how they got home that night. I visited Ray at his home many times over the years. He had one of the first Tabman Close Up Tables I ever made. He always called it "the tabman mat." I think of them often and their hospitality. They were determined that I should see everything Buffalo had to offer and that this hillbilly needed to see where Buffalo Wings were invented!!! Those were the days!! -=tabman

Many years back I took it to a fotocopy machine to enlarge it and framned it with a covering glass..

I have a couple of nice brass bowls proccured from Pier 1 for a few bucks each. My favorite is some obscure magic trick. Had a small (approx. 3 in) top hat, small wand a some dice. Threw the dice and instructions away and went "bowling".
BTW. I was just in Pier 1 and they had a small antique looking box just perfect to house my new GAZZO cups. (yes, I am very proud of them) |

Magic Inc. has always sold the Don Alan Bowl routine. This is the Benson with a climax.
The original is a brass bowl from India with etchings. If you look at Indian brass items you may locate one. It is similar to a rice bowl with about a 5" mouth. Magic Inc. sold a plastic version at one time. Later, they has to have some made of brass. You might want to email Magic Inc. in Chicago, for availability. |
