You do know why you blink?
It is an odd thing, but LOTS do it. The brain thinks if it doesn't see the move, no one else does. Kinda like the little kid who "hides" by closing and covering their eyes. The mirror is ok, but only one of many things needed to prastice with.... Quote:

Sadly, there are very few places to "go do" that will not kill your carrer if you go there and suck eggs. You can sell your great escape show to the local mall. However when you perform your milk can and pull off the gimmick in front of EVERYONE when you take the lid off, YOU are finished at the mall, and so is EVERY other escape artist who calls. No, I didn't make that one up, saw it happen. Due to the fact that there are more places to do other forms of magic as you learn the craft of showmanship, it stands to reason that you should begin there. |

Another possible reason for the blinking thing is that we train to misdirect using the eyes (amongst other things), and when our eyes are fixed unnaturally on our reflection (we're playing two roles here; performer >and< spectator), with your mind conflicted about where to look it chooses the simplest option available, to abstain by blinking. That and the self-dellusion thing too, it's just nicer to think it's the first one!
A much less forgiving practice partner that lets you judge yourself more objectively afterwards is a video camera; I learnt so much just from trying to film some of my routines, especially the more patter orientated ones. Not only will the camera pick up every mistake you make, every flaw in the routine and everything else you do wrong but that inhuman black lens and blinking LED is the coldest audience you'll ever have to perform for (give me the roughest pub crowd any day in preference to a lens in an empty room; at least with the hooligans there's something coming back to play on, even if it is a bottle). If you can get your routine flowing with warmth when performing just to a bit of metal you've a much better base on which to add those elements that can only be acquired from getting in front of people. |

And it does not react which makes things worse.
And Yes Mark, I agree 100%. It is because my brain does not want to see the move so I blink. That is Why I practise on my own till I have got things right, then I perform it for other magicians (friends) at the CMC meetings and they tell me what they saw and what they did not. I then keep peroming it to them at every meeting until they are satisfied that the audience will not see anything. Then I will present it to the public. Regards Wolflock

Meetings are very excellent to practice at and have someone else tell you if your flashing.

I find other magicians at club meetings are among the most forgiving audiences owing to the pressure to be civil and not to offend (that's if they're paying attention at all whilst waiting for their turn to show off their own tricks); I often have to assure them over and over that yes I do appreciate constructive criticism and want to know if something I'm doing is no good.
I'm tough to upset and am perfectly capable of telling the difference between frank assessment and personal assasination, I can decide subsequently what I think of the comment and decide for myself how to (or, as the case may be, whether to) act upon it.. if I had to choose, I'd rather be slated than patronised. |

I second Hull's "Gold Medal Showmanship."
Not only is it an excellent guide to showmanship and stage technique in general, it has a great chapter on showmanship for the escape artist. Steve

Looks like I have another book to add to my list of things to get.
I am also very difficult to upset. I don't take things that others say personally. Thanks Guys (and Gal). Regards Wolflock

Talk about walking encyclopdias- Steve Midnight has to be one of the most informed and well read historians within the art. Ask about any person, event, illusion or escape and the guy is there!
Steve, you mentioned in one post about the S&W100 side DB being easy to offset. Can you PM me with that info? I'm always wanting to learn. Thanks! Clyde |

Someone should do a book with the information that is not out there yet.
