Any thoughts on what card (value and suit) to use with a short card or a corner short. I'm thinking in terms of having it in the deck all the time, to use at any moment.
Thanks, Kim Meacham |

The first or last card in a Si Stebbins / Aronson / Tamariz-Mnemonica stack.
Joker - You can remove it and still have a full unaltered deck. You can later change your mind and short another card instead. You have an excuse to not use it or deny its presence if you want the spectator to name a card OTHER than your short card. Ace of Spades - Cut to a frequently-named card from a shuffled deck. Find your stock of four aces after a free cut. Ace of Clubs - It's an ace, and it's the first card in the Si Stebbins stack. Seven of Clubs - Needed for the 3 1/2 of clubs gag. Also, it's a very nondescript card - unlikely to be noticed if it shows up more than once. Eight of Spades or Eight of Clubs - Needed for John Bannon's eight-ball (pool ball) production. The eight of clubs is also first in an Eight-Kings stack. Ten of Spades - Needed for the long-card gag. Also, it's an easily remembered card without being TOO obvious. Queen of Hearts - Cut to a frequently named card from a shuffled deck. The ace of clubs, ace of spades, and seven of clubs have one-way faces, if you'd like your short card to also have that property. If you really want to knock yourself out, corner-short one card northwest-southeast and another one northeast-southwest. Make a thick card from the two jokers. |

I do not use a "short Card" per se, but I use a corner short in the same way. I corner short a Joker (or ten) and always have them to drop in a deck on the fly. If I am going to corner short one card for my deck, I use an 8 or 9 of Clubs as they do not seem to get called out for often and just seem to serve as "filler" in my deck. I use the same cards for "scalloped cards" (top or side) in my tuned deck. I corner short the black 9's (one pip one non pip) and the black 8's get the top or side scallops.
I position the A/s on the bottom of the deck then one each of the rest of the royal above each key card. Do a couple false cuts or shuffles and cut 4 small packets off the top one at a time (running up to the needed key card from highest to low) This leaves me with a small bottom stock where the A/S is bottom. Turn over all, one at a time to show a perfectly cut royal flush at the face of each packet. Stack them back in order for instant reset. It is a very simple demonstration of what a "Tuned Deck" can do.

Hi Emory and Poof.
Thanks for the responses. I had considered the jokers but rejected them because, to me, they stand out and can be easily noticed and remembered. Don't want them seen too often. I have been considering the 7 of clubs because I thought it was rather nondescript and not often chosen. I usually don't use short cards but I've found they are sometimes handy when using a stack. Thanks for your other thoughts. Much appreciated. Best, Kim |
