Hey gang,
My dear friend Randy Butterfield has just released his latest card project and it is a beauty. The project was quickly funded on Kickstarter in just a few short hours but there is still time! Check it out... WILD WEST Playing Cards - Deadwood & The Black Hills Fully-Custom Playing Cards that feature historical legends of Wild West’s Deadwood and The Black Hills regions. ABOUT THIS PROJECT... My name is Randy Butterfield, and I’ve been designing Playing Cards, an hour or two each night, for over seven years now. Some of my past designs include the ROME, Draconian, Honeybee, POLLOCK and Snake Oil Elixir Decks. I’ve always loved the Wild West, and have wanted to design a fully-custom Wild West Deck for quite some time. My family and I spent our vacation last summer in Deadwood and The Black Hills of North Dakota. It was one of our best trips!! Almost everything we saw was beautiful and historical. The trip pushed the WILD WEST: Deadwood & The Black Hills Decks to the top of my "to do" list. And I’ve been working on the designs since then! For this project, I decided the perfect medium would be classical - Pencil on Paper. It was a joy to create most of the work off the computer for this one! The end result Is every element, except for fonts and the Tuck Boxes’ Interior Map, is hand-drawn in pencil. I then scanned each of my drawings into the computer, outlined & cleaned them up, added coloring, and created the design composites from there. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BLACK HILLS... In 1874, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer (Jack of Diamonds) discovered gold during a U.S. Army expedition in The Black Hills of South Dakota. The discovery started the last great gold rush in America. Deadwood rapidly grew from a tiny gold camp into a town that attracted gold seekers, gamblers, outlaws and gunslingers. Wild Bill Hickok (King of Spades), Calamity Jane (Queen of Spades), Seth Bullock (King of Clubs) and George Hearst (Jack of Clubs) were some of the most notorious figures drawn to Deadwood’s allure! THE TUCK BOXES... Each WILD WEST: Deadwood & The Black Hills Tuck Box will be printed on a premium Matte Stock and will feature exteriors with 4-Color Process graphics + Gold FOIL + White FOAM Ink + Embossing (if we reach the $22,000 Stretch Goal) AND each Tuck Box will have a 4-Color Process Interior Map design. Renders can not do justice to how premium they will look!! THE CARDS... The Back Cards and Aces for these 2 Decks were inspired by elaborate engravings found in leather and weapons of the Wild West era. Like almost every other element in these Decks, the Back Cards and Aces are made up from Pencil Drawings I created off the computer. To fit with the different coloring of the 2 Back Cards, The Face Cards have different background and watermark colors. The Deadwood Face Cards have a cream / tan background, giving the design an overall sepia tone vibe. The Black Hills Face Cards have have a gun metal grey background, which contrasts beautifully with the Courts' drawings. Each of the Face Cards feature hand-drawn PIPS and watermark backgrounds. I drew the watermarked scenic drawings in a rougher / more sketch-like style than I did for the Courts And PIPS. The rougher style keeps the background scenary from overpowering the more important elements of each Face Card (Indices, PIPS, Courts...). The 4 backgrounds are matched to the 4 different Suits: CLUBS = Deadwood Main Street, SPADES = Saloon Interior, HEARTS = Native American Village and DIAMONDS = The Needles of The Black Hills. The Clubs and Spades Courts focus on historical figures who were instrumental in Deadwood’s growth and notoriety. Seth Bullock, Phoebe Hearst and George Hearst makeup the Clubs. The Spades include legendary Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and gold miner Potato Creek Johnny (characters are hyperlinked to informational pages for each one). The Hearts and Diamonds Courts include historical figures who were influential in The Black Hills and Montana regions. Crazy Horse, Elizabeth Custer and George Custer encompass the Diamonds. The Hearts include Lakota leader Sitting Bull, Annie Oakley and the showman Buffalo Bill Cody (characters are hyperlinked to informational pages for each one). The Jokers feature a full-body drawing of Wild Bill Hickok. THE LIMITED COLLECTORS SET... The Limited Collectors Set will be a KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE item, and is LIMITED to 250 Sets (240 available). They will NOT be available after this campaign. Each Limited Collectors Set includes:
ABOUT THE 32-PAGE COMPANION BOOK... The WILD WEST Companion Book (Finish Size = 3.5”W X 5”H) will hold 32 Pages of info about these Decks. Each Court will have a 2-Page Spread that includes a Bio Page and a page that contains a larger layout of the Court Card’s design. The Book will be printed on Uncoated Smooth White paper stock (120# Cover for the Cover Spread, 80# Text for the Interior Spreads). If we reach the $30,000 Stretch Goal, the Book will be upgraded and print on a Felt Weave paper stock. THE DIECUT BADGE DEALER COIN... The Badge Dealer Coin is inspired by an old Marshal Badge. It will be 2 inches in diameter, DIECUT to create the star in circle design, and will have an Antique Gold Finish. The Studio will be manufacturing the Badge Dealer Coin. I have worked with them in the past, and they‘ve created a physical proof / prototype for this project. As you can see from the photos above, it’s a showstopper! The Badge Dealer Coin will definitely be my new favorite Dealer Coin for Poker night! LEGENDS PLAYING CARD COMPANY... The WILD WEST: Deadwood & The Black Hills Decks will be printed by the Legends Playing Card Co., with their TAIWAN PRINTER (and with their Classic Finish). The Classic Finish is a softer and slicker paper. It’s more comparable to a vintage Bicycle Deck. This will be my fifth time printing with Legends Playing Cards. They do an amazing job!! Thank you, from the Butterfields! - Deadwood & The Black Hills trip, June 2018 SOME MORE PHOTOS OF THE PROTOTYPE CARDS & PENCIL DRAWINGS... RISKS AND CHALLENGES... FULFILLMENT - The WILD WEST: Deadwood & The Black Hills Campaign will be fulfilled from Texas, by Gamblers Warehouse. They do an excellent job, and have worked with many Kickstarter Playing Card projects. This will be my sixth time working with Gamblers Warehouse for fulfillment, and I’ve overseen printing and fulfillment production for numerous Playing Cards projects. We should have a good system ready to go. All of the designs are finished and ready to go into production. If we start off strongly, I will release the Print Files right away and get production underway. Thank you! Randy Butterfield ---
