Very powerful from many perspectives:

"found objects" "simplicity" "balance of anticipation and surprise" "natural hand movements" more

could be performed with many small objects.

Question: why did you decide on torn napkin pieces?

This is one of a collection that I have been working on.
The collection consists of impromptu material.
The goal is to do powerful magic anywhere with almost nothing.
I was sitting at a table in a coffee shop two days ago visiting with a friend.
I was asked what I was working on.
I took a napkin from my friend and did 4fx.

Anywhere - anything - anywhy

a noble objective

I am already musing on applications of the "Pacman Gobble" - though I am sure you have a better name. Smile

Thank you Al, I like it, very entertaining, it has a flavor of a trick that you do with coins in a DVD underground research series vol 2, where you show again the last dab/coin on your left hand. Very nice in both cases.

Now that Richard has mentioned it, I can explain.
I recently had an idea for another napkin trick for a book dedicated to napkins.
I sent a video of the idea to Richard and thought I would let you guys see it.
Well, he wanted it for Genii.
He was really excited about it and talked of featuring it in Genii.
Well, I do not know what to do about all of this so I took it off my web site and decided to let Richard call the shots.
In his email to me about it he says there is something uncanny about it psychologically as after seeing it he said he knows all the moves.
Well, I am honored. And I feel I can relax as those interested now know what happened.
And the book will probably not happen as Richard is getting my good stuff.
Thank you all.

Haven't been around for awhile.
Somehow the link got messed up.
Should work now.

Here is some stuff you might find interesting.
I have put this up elsewhere on this forum.

www.worldmagiccenter.com/SecretStuff/Coininbottle.mp4

www.worldmagiccenter.com/SecretStuff/SloMoROV.mp4

I have been working on articles for Genii. This is the kind of stuff I play with,

I am very pleased with the bottle thing. Worked for years to finish the trick like it starts.
And I am moving very slow in the ROV vid. I often practice that way. This time I kept the vid.

And, in this months Genii there is an article on science and magic.
As I have a degree in physics I frown on the use of the word science relative to magic.
I do not think the general public understands words like: science, quantum, entropy, and energy.

The article refers to change blindness. I prefer to call it mental misdirection.
I have used this for over 50 years. It is the cornerstone of Matrix and the 4FX routine.

Curious of your thoughts.

The "mental misdirection" essential to your Basic Vanish has implications to many other sleights/moves as well.
Add in Predictive Vision, Continuity of Motion, Contrast Bias, etc. and one finds the real secret of magic -
that what one sees and what one perceives are different - and what they remember even weirder.

One problem today is that many of these psychological ploys do not work on video - or not the same way.
Thus, those new to conjuring reject many fine effects because they cannot "play in minds eye" what the action will look like to a live spectator.

I agree that the "illusion of knowledge" makes combining magic and science possibly confusing, yet it can also be the basis of interesting story lines.
Since an audience will accept any plausible sounding "cause of the magic" when presented with a straight face, referring to bosons and exitons
instead of woofle dust can carry an aura of legitimacy - especially if someone with a smart phone looks them up.

Regardless, please keep experimenting with what works live.
Perhaps the declining knowledge of science (reliance on believed stuff instead) will increase the impact of magic on future generations.
